I know what you mean and there is a good explanation for it.
When we dream the aminergic system of the brain that is responsible for the critical thinking is decreased, so when we become lucid it can still be a drop of that system which makes you forget:
that you have control of the dream, laying in a bed, dream characters aren't real and that the dream situation isn't important and shouldn't be your highest priority.
Does that sound familiar? With stabilization you somehow can increase this system which is a big mystery, I mean why would the system increase? Are you tricking the brain to think it's awake?
Speaking of which there is a fast way to increase the system and that is waking up... Yes you read that right If you wake yourself up from the dream and thereby increase the system you can then chain the dream and return fully aware, you can do this by find a way to wake up from the dream and the use the DEILD method.
It's a little risky, but according to me it is definitely worth it because you can either spend a vague DILD running around like a hen not being very aware, or you can wake yourself up and return back into the dream with a WILD and be perfectly aware, the kind of awareness you have always dreamed of (hehe).
The systems of the brain is as I said truly a mystery, because it doesn't make sense that we with just intention and affirmation can make the aminergic system increase at some point during the night.
I for example have changed my mantra from "I am aware of my dreams" to "I am aware of the first REM dream of the night" and most of my lucid dreams are actaully taking place during the first REM now! It is probably so that you need to understand the system in order for this to work, but who knows it might work anyway!
I hope this gives some insight.
Sweet dreams
