Spontaneous recall is still result of prospective memory. In fact, is what makes the target responding to cue even after being distracted prior to it appearing. And be thankful for that, or MILD wouldn't work at all So don't worry if you're doing it the right way: you're using prospective memory, and that's the goal.
The goal is naturally to pick as many targets as possible, which obviously shows an increase in performance which makes it easier to pick targets inside the dream, but it's not easy to compare prospective memory inside dreams (in which your memory is entirely affected to some degree) to waking life. LaBerge has several articles on MILD, but they all possess poor methodological quality, and maybe some bias since he was testing his own technique.
In the end, expect lucids by spontaneous recall, unless you're trying to using MILD to WILD (MILD is not only applicable to DILD), but even that, I doubt most of times you would activate the association if not by spontaneous recall.
Moving this to Attaining Lucidity.
