      Too excited sometimes

Hi sometimes I am too excited to lucid dream and so I stay up instead of sleeping...any suggestions besides telling myself to calm down and sleep so I can actually try to lucid dream when this happens...? Anyone else experience this? I guess I should get into the habit of a nighttime routine.

Just stop thinking about the future. It's hard sometimes but it's what you've got to do. Use will power! Be self-aware of your thoughts and each time an undesirable thought about the future pops up, hammer it down with "No! I'm not thinking about this!" Use this to stop the thoughts each time they arise. You might have to do it repeatedly at first, but with will power and self-awareness, you'll regain control of yourself.

      Hey there,

This happens to me if I'm too focused on 'staying conscious' or on a particular 'technique'. These are abstract thoughts and tend to keep me awake. The way for me to get back to sleep is to shift my attention to actually sleeping and dreaming. I might imagine a pleasant, relaxing dream scene, or if I'm seeing hypnagogics, try to focus on them.

Failing that, I sometimes find the solution is to simply get out of bed for fifteen minutes and do something pleasantly distracting, like read a bit.

      Just my 2 cents,

The more I focus on sleep, the more it eludes me. I listen to things while going to bed. Audio books, music, instrumental music. Kind of depending on how much distraction I need. I mainly listen to audio books as I need a lot of distraction. If I make it through a long time without falling asleep, then at least I listened to a book. I usually just listen until I realized that I haven't been listening for a while (due to falling asleep) and then turn it off, turn over and sleep. With audio books, I just lay down and visualize what is happening in the book and then all of the sudden I usually realize I haven't heard the last who knows how many minutes. I then put it away. Next time I listen to the book, I just start from where I last remember. I usually relisten to a lot of things because of this, but it is nice to cement the book in.

I just tuck the thought into a little envelope to think about later.....hammers sound too violent....
