Most of my lucid dreams are DILDs too. For me, I need to combine awareness with intention setting.

Awareness alone gets me to a point where I'm aware of dreaming in at least one dream per night, but not with the clarity of mind to break away from whatever dream plot I'm in. I'll be aware that I'm dreaming, even use dream control to change elements and overcome obstacles, but will continue along whatever path the dream has set for me.

To get to full lucidity and pursue my own goals, or use dream incubation, I need to add an element of intention to that awareness. So I'll combine awareness exercises with intention practices, which gives me the best result.
