You can do both or just one at a time, depending on how it feels like, how much sleep you had, etc... I think this level of fine-tuning is something that everyone should experiment with himself. But I tend to focus more on entering right away after waking up from a lucid or a vivid dream (and do DEILD) or if I'm very sleepy and let's say had only 3 - 5 hours of sleep. Or if I only had 3 - 5 hours of sleep I sometimes do only mantras (if I know I'm too sleepy). Mantras in combination with maintaining awareness I use after more sleep, like 5 - 7 hours, and especially after long WBTB and before naps. After more sleep or a long time of being awake I'm awake enough to do mantras without falling asleep and losing awareness by accident, and from the mantras I transition gradually to the WILD (falling asleep while aware).
