I guess a key would be not to want it too much. If you focus to intently without letting relaxation come, WILD will not work.
Yes, waking up a few times during the night will make you more tired. So I wouldn't recommend messing with your sleep patterns if you've got something important coming up.
Give it a few more tries. After all, time is key to lucid dreaming.
If all else fails, try MILD, or other proven techniques.
