Reality checks do work, and are probably the most effective way of achieving dream induced lucid dreams. Three LD's a week is an excellent ambition, and doing a reality check once an hour is a good idea, however, a more effective way to reality check, is by using a trigger. For example, every time you look at your cell phone do a RC. Even more effective, is to keep a dream journal, and document your most frequent dreamsigns, and try to coincide RC's with them. As mentioned by keeper, the theory is that one day, your mind will trigger a RC in a dream, and you will become lucid. I personally use dreamsigns and RC's to become lucid frequently, the tutorials section probably has a huge catalogue, but here are a few that work for me:
read some text twice, if the text differs the second time, you are dreaming
try breathing through a plugged nose, if you can, you are dreaming
try flying, this one's self explanatory
jump up and down, if you can't feel gravity, you are dreaming
Good luck and happy dreaming.
