The original WBTB concept leverages the fact that REM cycles lengthen as the night goes on. When you wake up afgter 5-6 hours, stay up for a while and go back to bed, there's a good likelihood that you'll hit REM very quickly upon falling asleep. This is beneficial as you just left the conscious world and probably have some "concious energy" still active in your mind. Hence it's easier to have a DILD.

This is in contrast to DILDs based on simply going to sleep at 10:00 for example, and hoping you'll have a DILD. The fact is, you won't even hit REM for about the first 85 minutes, which will leave any "concious energy" you had well in the dust. That REM period only lasts for 5 minutes, so you don't have much time.

Do you see why WBTB is beneficial to DILDs?
