But the sound will have a lot less chance of reaching into your sleep... which is the downside.

Will deep sleep make it harder to LD? In general yes, but these things depend on the person. Generally speaking though, I'd work on your dreamrecall first. If you can get good dreamrecall when you sleep deeply, then you should probably be able to get lucid too (because the good dream recall is a clear sign that you're not under too deep).

If you find that all attempts at improving dream recall fail, then yes, it might be possible to try and find methods to sleep lighter. Be aware though that this is gonna take quite some adjusting too, and might leave you feeling very exhausted and fatigued for quite a long time. So you might need to make up for it by getting 'more' sleep.
