Reality checks are really just a means to condition you to reflexive ask yourself, to an odd scenario, "Hey, that's odd" = "Am I dreaming?". It does not necessarily immediately equate lucidity as much as it does introduce you to noticing differences between dreaming and being awake. It also keeps your focus on dreams and the idea of lucid dreaming, more or less.
The important next step would be to notice dream sings in your dreams. Try and pick apart the most common things you see in the dreams. For me, I typically see trains. Thus, whenever I see a train, I usually think I am dreaming and take it from there.
They are all steps to gradual habituation and the ability to differentiate dreaming states from waking states.
What do you think...?
