Expect them to work. Know that they'll work. If you doubt that they'll work, then they very well may not.

You may also want to try a different RC, such as the nose one. Certain reality checks may not work for certain people, which may be the case for you if the hand RC never works. If it only fails one time, it is likely just a fluke.
