      Slow your heart

I was pondering over how to relax quicker and easier, and I heard about this thing. Most people know that if you breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, it improves your air quality, and slows your pulse.

Well on TV (Brainiac Science Abuse) they showed that if you stick your thumb in your mouth, close your mouth, you'll look like an idiot. And more importantly, it makes your pulse drop like crazy when you try (as hard as your lungs let you) to breathe out, and you can become very relaxed. It activates some valve or nerve which causes this "phenomenon".

I tried this last night. And it is surprisingly heart-slowing. I found myself very relaxed.

      As a side note:

In the same episode, they showed how better the mind and body perform when treated to a higher than normal exposure of oxygen. They showed, and presented results of a study that showed that the mind can often recall things much better whenyour oxygen level is higher. "These effects can last for over a day."

And many people know that if you breathe hard, deep and fast for half a minute or so then you get an oxygen rush.

Tonight I will try some sort of similar experiment. My hopes are that it will make my recall much more vivid. I will do the same in the middle of the night and when I wake up I will do it again.

Wondering if anyone has had any results with the above two mini-tips, and hoping that this might help people.

I did try the slowing down of the heart rate whilst using my lungs to exhale more than they could go. Next thing I knew, I was deep into sleep. This seems to be a very nice tec to fall asleep faster THX for posting bro

The "marine diving response" has long been recognized as being able to improve physical and mental performance. I don't know too much about it, but I understand it works by training your body to be more efficient with its oxygen use. There is something hardwired into our brain. When we are forced to hold our breath, or unable to breathe, it alters the way our minds and bodies work.

Swimmers train themselves to hold their breaths for insanely long times while performing intense physical activity. This is similar to runners training at high altitude. Your body becomes more efficient with its oxygen use. Then when you receive oxygen normally, you are able to super perform.

Does anybody have any literature on this? I just found out about it a couple months ago, and would like to learn more. Maybe start a swimming fitness program.

When I try to slow my heart down and simply relax to fall asleep easier I just stop breathing and the lungs start to pull in air by them selfes, I get that feeling at least.

i was watching the show Human Body: Pushing the Limit or whatever, and they said when you dont have enough food, you use what you have way more efficiently. so there are some theories that if you are always in a state of partial starvation, it may be beneficial. they had a guy who was in his 30s who was on a 1000 calarie diet. if i remember correctly, your cells or whatever don't oxidize as quickly so you may live longer. so it makes sense that the oxygen one works too.

Oh I saw that episode, that show looks surprisingly good. I thought it would be boring, but then I saw an episode and it was great. I also like I Shouldn't Be Alive on Discovery Channel.

Pretty cool and interesting!! Thanks for bringing that up. Did they show how to not sleep during class as well? xD I often find myself going through hypnagogia and everything lol.

Btw, does anybody know how to change your heart rate like those yoga guys do? I'd love to learn it!

So are you basically just sucking your thumb? If so, maybe that's why babies fall asleep so much easier with a thumb or pacifier in their mouth.

      Question:

When you stick your thumb in your mouth and close your mouth.. are you breathing in and out through your nose

      or

are you breathing in through your nose and forcing air past your thumb and out your mouth?

It just works if you put your thumb in your mouth, and even though it's impossible, let all your lungs try and breath out through your mouth. It works perfectly!

Why the thumb? can't it be another finger? Can't it be no finger at all?

I've tried with all my fingers and the yseem to work the same lol.

      ya so the jist is:

      1. Take a really deep breath
      2. Block your mouth SOMEHOW
      3. Try blowing out your mouth as hard and long as you can (try not to pop any blood vessles...)
      4. Take "thing" out of your mouth, breathe normally, and feel the rush

this is actually so sickk. i do this at school and stuff, also the deep breathing oxygen rush thing. i lovem

ok well this is SLIGHTLY dangerous, it can make you faint which isnt good if something goes wrong. if u comping that with someother things u faint so dont go nuts is cutting off the oxygen to the brain so it shutting ur body down to try can relax it so u wont need much as far as i know, and if u do pass out its only for a second or 2 and wont help u sleep from my experiences. ill try it though.

This calms you down, and that's why i do this after hard training.
You can feel the blood pump up to the head.
I don't know if the heart pumps harder or if it just feels like it does.

Edit: Nevermind, question was answered in replies above.

The whole dropping pulse thing sounds interesting... Time for some healthy experimenting!
