I have the exact problem as you guys are describing. I think I'm getting closer to a way around it though and it has to do with the technique where you're not actively trying to WILD. I can't remember who posted it or exactly what it's called, but basically you relax and let your mind wander as soon as your lie down - only occasionally trying to bring it back to lucid dreaming. The goal, obviously, is to stay conscious. Last night I found that I'm a LOT calmer when I'm not actively anticipating the SP and the WILD. I let myself enter SP and I immediately started visualizing. At this point, especially since you've let your mind wander from the beginning, it's very very easy for images to come to your mind. Also, this would be very effective for people with ADD, ADHD, whatever, because it's OK if you stray off topic.
From what I've experienced, the more calm you are and the more you let your mind wander, the easier it is to beat that adrenaline kick. It's actually pretty easy to get your body relaxed as long as you don't move it, but you have to get your mind into the right state as well because your mind has a very powerful sway over the rest of your body. If your mind is too active, your body will be, too.
Now my only problem is becoming so calm and relaxed that I fall asleep too soon to WILD! That's actually what happened last night, but I'm getting closer than I have in the past. I got to the point where I was actually being pulled into a dream, but I think I just fell asleep and forgot that I knew I was dreaming. There is definitely a delicate balance to be struck when it comes to WILDing...
