i completely agree. i find the best thing to do after gaining lucidity, is try to gain MORE lucidity. dont do ANYTHING. i dont really pay attention to my dream untill i feel completely concious about what's going on. try to think about something going on in your real life, and then think, well that doesnt affect me, because im dreaming. my first lucid dream i was only lucid for about 3 seconds because in those seconds, i transformed into a super-superhero and i flew away to fight evilllll..... hahahaha. i obviously forgot that i was dreaming and i was focused on killing the guy that was stealing shit and carrying a gun....

I'm new here but the advise given sounds very good, I'm going to focus more on grounding myself once I'm lucid.
I find that as soon as I'm lucid, I start flying around and doing ridiculus things. Before I know it, I'm back in a normal dream or I'm out of control and "can't do anything" as you said. Or its very hard to stop myself from flying past things or people I want to stop at, which gets aggravating.

Don't get me wrong, somtimes it works great. But only in short bursts. I think if you focus more on grounding yourself, (I like that term), and less on trying to change things. In the long run you will be more succesful with controling the dream.
Like I said, I'm new here, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Yep, I know exactly what you mean. I go to try and do something and then I forget I am lucid and I end up doing some stupid dream thing like trying to get DCs lucid or something. I don't really know how to avoid it other than to focus grounding yourself like other people have said, and maybe to continue checking that you are dreaming often. Maybe continuing to remind yourself that you are dreaming.
