Yoga Nidra as a means to achieve LDs

Yoga Nidra is a type of yoga in which the user falls into what is described as a deep sleep with awareness. There are several tutorials online and most of them include MP3s in which you listen to careful instructions to reach this deep sleep. Also during each practice you create a goal which you implant in your subconscious. So this is very similar to hypnosis. It is very easy to do and I had success on my first try. Usually the practice takes from 20-40 minutes, but it can be done in less or more time depending on how deep. After about 10-15 minutes of this I usually see hypnogogic imagery also.

I was wondering if this means of attaining LDs had already been used a lot by forum users or if anyone has tried this and is willing to give the rest of the board more information.

      Thanks!

      Interesting!

"It is a state of conscious deep sleep. During the practice of yoga nidra, one appears to be sleep, but the consciousness is functioning at the deeper level of awareness. It is sleep with a trace of deep awareness. It is state of mind in between wakefulness and dream. Normally when we sleep, we loose track of our self and cannot utilize this capacity of mind. Yoga nidra enables the person to be conscious in this state and nurture the seed of great will power, inspire the higher self, and enjoy the vitality of life."

Ancient yogis meditated to get to a higher awareness, through Lucid Dreaming. I guess many people are still doing it. And Yoga Nidra seems to be the way they do it!
Thanks a lot for this information. I will try this at once!

Sounds good, could you point me towards a good online tutorial/mp3? I'm very interested but don't really know where to start.

I've read snippets here and there about how Yogi's have attained altered states via chants/mantra's and the like.

Most every discussion or book I've seen went so deep into the how and why of it that my interest began to wane.

For enlightened beings, some Yogi's sure are long-winded. lol

If you might suggest an MP3 or URL where we might be able to get more info, I'd appreciate it.

      Thank you in advance.

My understanding is that Yog Nidra goes beyond the dreaming state. I guess you could hop off the bus a little early if you wanted.

Even more interesting, so you mean to imply the Nidra takes one out of body instead of just into the dreamstate?

No, apparently it takes you to a place 'beyond mind' or something like that. You are aware of consciousness but thoughts are formless. Or something.

      Hmmm.

I've found that 'vagueness' to be be fairly common in most Yogi texts at least from the cursory glance I've given similar materials in the past.

That's always sat uneasy with me, but in a way piqued my curiosity too. lol

Hopefully Dreamer or someone else equally skilled will suggest addt'l materials and/or a good starting point.

I can see where some states of consciousness would be hard to put into words, but yeah.

I've never heard of yoga nidra, but I have heard o dreamyoga, heres a good site which sums up the most of dream yoga: http://luciddreamyoga.blogspot.com/. Of anyone knows where I can find these MP3s for yoga nidra, feel free to link me up. Google has a lot of info on it, but most sites talk all the time about how it will help you, and what it is and what it does, and talks about the theory and everything else, except about the keypoint which is how to do it!

      Chayba,

That's an interesting site! Thank you for providing the link. I'm at work now, but will delve into this a little deeper when I get home tonight.

Last night I listened to a "session", or how you might want to call it. Didn't get me lucid, but really relaxed and perhaps a SP. It is very similar to Mnemoni Inductions...

I will try this tonight again, but this time during a WBTB.

And for those who are looking for links; I don't encourage anything, just pointing out where you might find some files. Torrentz.com!

I hit this pretty hard via research over the weekend and sadly discovered that most roads via the net only lead to one of two things.

      1. Sales Pitches by various metaphysical organizations claiming their Yogic cd will make you do everything but walk on water.

      2. Very simple guided relaxation techniques which you could probably do just as easily yourself.

Perhaps I was just looking in the wrong places, but much of what I read, while making grandiose claims, seemed to have little of merit to back it up.

Any thoughts or links to what I should be reading.

Chayba was dead on...few sites actually give you the how of it in detail.
