      WILD Doesn't seem to work!

I have tried to WILD after 5 hours sleep the last 3 nights. I lay down once i have had a drink and bin to the toilet and lay dead still. I feel my body relax deeply and sometimes i feel really dizzy as if the bed spins and my muscles are all really relaxed, but this is as far as i can get.

I can't get past this stage at all. My muscles are all very relaxed and if stopped they would feel like they had been to sleep but they arent paralysed at all. I don't feel any paralysis and i dont see any HI or light or anything. I am still totally aware of my body and i can lay like that up to an hour and which point i give up. Is there anything that i am doing wrong cos i would like to feel something just so i know im on the right track.

      Thanks.

      Hi Lozbritt!

Wow! You've been on DV longer than me! Ha!

Anyway, with the WILD + WBTB (wake-back-to-bed) combination, people usually stay up anywhere between 5 seconds to 1 hour after they wake up from their alarm.

The people who stay awake for 30 mins or a full 1 hour do so because they are prone to losing consciousness easily when attempting WILD. They stay up longer so they can be awakened enough so that they wont fall unconscious during the attempt.

The people who stay awake for a short period of time are the opposite. They do this because if they stay awake too long, they won't be able to get back into the relaxed sleep mode. I believe you fit this latter category (as do I) because you are having trouble getting relaxed enough to pass the initial stages of SP.

Although you may get to early SP easily, you are apparently too awake to fully let yourself go. I would recommend not even getting up to pee or have a drink at all on your next attempt. Just turn off your alarm, and go right back to sleep (with your WILD attempt).

I'll also ask you: does your heart start beating wildly when you reach initial SP? If so, this may be detrimenting your efforts. Try to avoid it, I used to have the same problem. Same with swallowing.

Anyway, hope this helps. Shout me out if you have any other Q`s.

The easiest way to avoid the fast-beating heart is getting used to the experience. It may take 5 or so tries, your heart should eventually calm down. I had a WILD hiatus for a few months a while ago, and when I restarted I got the fast beats again, they went away.

As for the swallowing, I'd love to say it's ok to do it, but in reality they will stop a WILD dead in its tracks. It is absolutely imperative that you not swallow. This is because it's a conscious action, so your body will know that your mind is still awake and conscious, so the body will never go to sleep, and thus you'll be laying there for hours on end.

The best way to avoid the swallowing and other nuisances for me, is to focus attention on something like a clock ticking, or a fan whirling. Anything to get your mind off a possible need to swallow. Also random thoughts running through your head help as well, just don't get lost in them or you'll fall unconscious into a normal sleep.

I've read that propping your head/upper body up a little helps with the swallowing.. it's certainly worth a try.

Great idea, Clairity! I can see how that could help, too. It would keep any saliva up and away from the back of your throat. Excellent advice, I'll try it myself!

I havent had a wild ever, so I dont have many tips for you, but I've got one. I don't think I read it here though, think it was on a site explaining how to meditate. They said, to avoid the swalloving, you should put your tongue up against the "roof" of your mouth sort of speak. I haven't tryed this myself, but I could work

That can help the saliva from accumulating in your mouth. If your problem is saliva, keep your mouth open a bit, should happen if your face is relaxed anyway, and your mouth should dry up quickly.

For me however, I always have a mound in the middle of my throat that wont go away. I just learn to ignore it.

I have been trying WBTB plus WILD for about a week now without success. I think part of my problem might be fear, as a few years ago I had the experience of waking while my body was still in SP. As I've read, if you don't know what's going on it can be pretty scary, which it was for me. I had the classic sense of dread, and sensed the presence of evil, standing right in front of me. I thought I was experiencing my dealth. Needless to say, it totally freaked me out when I finally brought myself out of it. I've been hoping my new conscious knowledge of hypnogogic hallucinations will ease me into lucidity, but wonder if I'm unconsciously blocking because of my previous freak out. Also, I have sleep apnia, and must use a BiPap machine with a mask like thingie to keep my breathing regular. I've been using it now for years and have adjusted to the thing being on my face, but wonder if that too might be part of the problem. Any other apnia folks out there have any suggestions or thoughts?

I cannot help myself, but i feels slightly bad about swallowing. It is often problem for me too. But in my opinion. Everytime you try to force your will in another direction you are only making the urge stronger.

Well, i wouldnt be so sure about if to swallow or not
