Unhappy I can't get to the Hypnogogia stage! Please help.

I've been trying for months to lucid dream, I've had a couple accidentals, but none from how I'm trying to do it. And yes, I have taken many breaks. (in fact, I'm just coming off a long break) I want to learn the WILD method so I can LD whenever, and I've gotten to the geometric pattern stage once while trying, and once when my mind wandered, then I realised that I should be paying attention. I saw the geometric hypnogogia, but then it faded away slowly.

My problem is that when I try counting and paying strict attention to the hypnogogia, I'm too alert and I never fall asleep. If I don't pay attention enough, my mind wanders and I just fall into a normal dream. Also, even when I balance it just right, I wont get any visual hypnogogia, but sometimes I will get audio hypnogogia- usually someone I know calling my name. but almost always when that happens, it alerts me and I snap out of it and cant fall asleep. Also, I don't know how the audio is sopposed to help me (if it is.. if not, ignore that sentance). Please help! I need to be able to lucid dream, as I am a writer/director and I want to be able to envision my ideas and come up with new ones.

Summary: I need to know how to get to the hypnogoggia stage without falling asleep or being unable to sleep. Thank you.

(sorry for the long post, I just wanted to clarify)

The goal is to fall asleep while having some consciousness. Dont focus on the hypo whatever it will only make it worse for you. I personally almost never have it and I wild almost every night. Dont over complicate it and just sleep like normal.

I get SP every night by:

sleeping on my side or a slightly uncomfortable position

not focusing on the swirling colors behind my eyelids

listening to my mind play itself with no active involvement to the direction of any thoughts

if you are successful, you will feel it. For me, at the moment before SP, it feels like my body begins to descend and I can't move even if I try and the 'swirling colors' intantly pull into a point at the middle of my visual perception, then the odd noises begin.

Its really easy to LD from there, I mostly get up for false awakenings (because this technique is really good for astral projection).

      Good luck

I don't get HI when I WILD. I guess I skip that stage. Once I feel SP setting in I wait about 20 seconds. Once you feel it go away do an RC.

That's how it works for me anyways :/. No HI but loud noises and pain

WILD seems to be different for everyone...
I don't have any Hypnagogic imagery, when sleeping or when WILDing. So I simply don't bother with the tutorials that depend on them: they're not for me, and probably not for you.
I do, however, have other sensation, like falling. That would be "bodily-kinesthetic hypnagogia", I guess. Sometimes, sound (voices or noise) too.

You say : "I've had a couple accidentals, but none from how I'm trying to do it" - Maybe you should reconsider your method and experiment around those accidentals ? Don't follow the tutorials to the letter, and find what works for you; people can have very different preferences for WILDing:
      - best time could be the night, or morning, or an afternoon nap
      - need or ability to focus on visuals, body, breathing...
      - people who fall asleep very fast need to follow a different technique than those who need a long time...
      Dec. 2006 - July 2007:
      92 DILDs + 30 WILDs ; 75% too short, 24% decent, ~3 of 2 to 5 minutes
      (I stopped counting after that)

the best reply i have seen in some time.

Just start breathing and let everything go on its own(yes the breathing too),don't take any action in leading your toughs, just watch it go around from a difference.

      GL,and gl to me too

You don't get to have hypnogogia ? Do you perceive any other hallucinations instead of hypnogogia ? How do you attempt a wild ?

Hypnagogic images/ sounds come during sleep onset during the Theta brainwave state. While you are deeply relaxed, right before falling asleep, try to 'see' with your eyes closed. You will eventually see colored blobs and possible geometric shapes floating in the blackness.
