I thought all the rules of projection applied, but when I woke up I realized that it was just a lucid dream.... But because I thought it was an AP, I didn't think I could control things without having a consequence. For some reason, because I read about evil spirits and what not in the AP realm, and even though I don't believe in it, I still thought i was in AP-land.
Technically, if you are in a dream, but you think you are astral projecting, you are not lucid dreaming, because you think you are doing something besides lucid dreaming, since you think you're not just dreaming.

Sounds like you started out lucid, then thought that you were doing something different and actually ended up losing your lucidity by thinking you were doing something beyond lucid dreaming

Depending on what you believe of AP and dreaming will effect how you can tell them apart. Because of the lack of empirical evidence, I personally believe that APers are just people who are aware in their dreams, but not aware they are dreaming, and so are able to retain consciousness while entering a dream state but believe themselves to be in another realm of existence instead of just a dream. So if it were me with this problem, trying to keep them distinct, I would just tell myself that I was lucid dreaming and not even wonder if it was anything else, since I already knew it was a dream.

Which I guess doesn't help if you DO believe in AP, sorry So, if you'd like me to move this to Beyond Dreaming, let me know and you will have responses from people who aren't as skeptical!

I do believe I was lucid, but I just think that because what I had read about AP, I just believed that in the dream. I remember choosing to do the things that I did in the dream (weighing pros and cons to what I should do), but I now see that I should distinct the dream as just only a dream and nothing else. I haven't experienced an AP to what the books seem to say it's like (different planes, other 'spirits', etc), so I know it was just a dream. Anyways, it was just a odd experience for me -- thanks for your inputs!
