      Meditation helping to attain lucidity?

So I've heard that there are meditation techniques that some people believe aid their chance of attaining lucidity. Can someone fill me in a little bit on this subject?

      Hi Senta,

Well I don't know if there is a specific type of meditation that aids in lucid dreaming, but meditation in general can help by way of training your mind to focus. Hence, if you can take control of your mind and focus on becoming lucid in dreams (such as through self-hypnosis) then in that sense meditation can help.

Also, through deep meditation you should be able to bring your mind frequency down to the levels you experience during sleep, which may aid in having a lucid 'experience' or even a WILD.

Thanks, Joe. Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

Do you think if I repeat the mantra "I can realize I am dreaming while I am in a dream" or something along the lines of that in my head while meditating it could help? Or if I meditate while listening to one of the Subliminal Lucid audio files on this site?

The worst that could happen is that it wouldn't help, but I still enjoy meditating so... Meh =P

Sure, I actually listen to binaural beats every night as I go to bed. It doesn't really help with lucids, but for now I just want to learn to quiet the mind so maybe later I can start doing that self-hypnosis stuff (as you are suggesting with the mantra).

Actually, one technique that Stephen LaBerge used when he was starting out was to count himself to sleep as follows... "one, I am dreaming... two, I am dreaming... three, I am dreaming... etc". It sounds very much like a meditation mantra. Only difference is that you must keep some level of awareness in order to keep your count (I've tried it and couldn't believe that I'd loose count before I got to 30 in most cases!).

Meditation and LDs are linked, IMO: both involve increasing your awareness in the present moment. Meditation quiets the mind and brings you into a centered, attentive, lucid mindset while awake; this is perfect training for lucid dreams, because they rely on that awareness to trigger the question "am I dreaming?" Think of how many more LDs you would have if you were actually paying attention to what is going on instead of just coasting along in the dream without reflection. Without meditation, this absent minded coasting is exactly what most people do during most of their waking hours -and if this is what you do all day, how can you expect to behave any differently in a dream?

In a way, I agree with this. Yes.
For me, not so much meditation but a 'constant state of awareness'. BillyBob's Dream Yoga Tutorial is just that.

You could use it similarly to a MILD, repeating the phrase over and over "I will lucid dream", hammering it into your brain, but I wouldn't do that.

Meditation is different for everyone. Try it yourself, see what works and what doesn't.

Curious, why not hammer the phrase?

It's usually easier to to slide something in smoothly, and willingly accept it, than to have it forced upon you like a battering ram.
      In my opinion, of course.

I found this website a few weeks ago..

This is a link directly to the meditation that is recommended for beginners. There's a video at the top of the page. Watch that and he will explain everything about it to you.

I've just started meditating when I found this. But I bought a stool which would probably be one of the easiest ways to sit.

I came to know 3 types of meditation that dramatically aid with LDing ...
      Here it goes:
      1. The well known "Vipassana Meditation" - basically you just stop your internal dialog. AMAZING meditation, and also increases the length of the LD (at least for me)
      2. "Recapitulation" - introduced by Carlos Castaneda . In this meditation you recall events/people/etc. in great detail, while breathing in a special way. (to learn more google it) - this meditation, besides changing your life, also helps with LDing in more then one way.
      3. a Tantra breathing meditation in which you "breath from your genitals" (inhale) up through your spine (and kidneys), pause briefly between the shoulder blades, continue to the Third Eye , pause there, and start exhaling "down" the front of the body, pause a bit below the navel and go down to the genitals again and repeat as much as possible.... this one improves WILDing abilities.... It is highly recommended to learn these techniques from more comprehensive sources...

I actually came across this last one in more than 1 book, with slight variations (some include the tongue...etc.), so I don't remember, but it sounds right! my favorite one is described in Taisha Abelar's book...

I've been looking to get into meditation. Should I start with these methods, being as I would also like to have effects on Lucid Dreams as well? Or should I start with a more "basic" form of meditation? These forms sound interesting, and I'll read up on them regardless.

EDIT - I missed the link up there, I'll start with the one in the video given on the website. Thanks.

I have also been looking into meditating recently, not really hard enough, but I beleieve it is in fact very similar to lucid dreaming because in both you discover who you are by searching your conscience. I think when summer hits im going to start really looking into meditation.

Meditation makes WILDing very easy thats for sure. If you meditate, after a while you will get the hang off unbreakable concentration, and thats all you need for WILDing. What I did to improve my concentration was simply hold my attention on something during the day, like my breath, while doing stuff I would do otherwise. It's the same kind of skill you need for WILDing.

yeah i was about to make a new thread but found this...

i've been meditating for 8 days now. the past 3 days, my dreams have been significantly more vivid, EVEN when i don't get enough sleep or have to take sleep medication (which i do occasionally for a reason that's unimportant).

i definitely did not know this could happen, so it's not one of those placebo deals. totally unexpected and GREAT. definitely helps build your "mindfulness muscle".
