Inhibiting REM movements to achieve LDs

(Okay, so I'm thinking of ways to achieve what some LD devices can do, without me having to spend money. )

      Here are my thoughts:

Could you alert yourself to the onset of REM sleep by inhibiting (gently) the movement of your eyelids in some way? Two thoughts on how to do this:

      1) Wear a normal sleep mask (or just a scarf wrapped round your head) and roll up small balls of tissue paper (or use cotton wool) and put them in the mask so that they gently push your eyelids. When REM starts, hopefully your brain can pick up the signal, "something's different here" and help you become lucid.

      2) Put sticky tape over your eyes.

(Incidental: Perhaps the action of taping your eyes could also help people to condition themselves to wake up from dreams without opening their eyes (and thus attempt a DEILD))

I think I need to post a warning about long term use of 'devices' to induce LDs. I used a light that goes off or a light that stays on and try to sleep for months although it was intermittent use I had created a permanant feeling of anxiety and now I have insomnia even without any device. For your eyelids idea and inhibiting anything that is natural to sleep it will cause sleeping problems later on because the mind will be so aware of the 'device' that it will create a habit of not sleeping properly and you'll develop insomia like me. So if you plan to use this for long I advice not to.

Methinks you're jinxing yourself. It's a hard mindset to get out of. I don't think this would happen to everyone. I also believe that if it did, it's reversible. Speaking from past experience.

Thank you for your input, everyone. I am quite happy at how my WILD attempts are progressing now. I am coming to believe what I read elsewhere - that you should try to master "natural" techniques before you reach for "gadgets"; I think that way you get more of a sense of achievement.
