      Non-lucid dream/Lucid dream/Awake

Three different states; we know they are different; but why?

What is the fundamental difference between the three states?

      Is it awareness?
      Self awareness?
      The ability to think?
      The ability to choose?
      The knowledge of your senses?
      The ability to make goals?
The ability to remember past events?
The knowedge that there is a past, present and future?

I realise that, in reality, it's probably very complex. However, I'm looking for a very simple core behaviour or action that separates these three states. I am hoping that it is one simple action/behaviour that exists to a small degree in non-lucid dreams, to a greater degree in lucid dreams, and to a great degree in the waking state. That way, ideally, you'd be able to identify occurrences of that behaviour in your non-lucids, increase the frequency of that behaviour in dreams (and in real life to condition yourself) until your non-lucids become lucid.

      Awake: you are conscious.
non-lucid: you are dreaming, but unaware you are dreaming.
lucid: you are aware you are dreaming.

Don't mean to sound trite, but I think you are overcomplicating this.

Yup, it all comes down to self-awareness. Even in a normal dream you are aware of what is going on around you. You just aren't aware of your self as a dream body/figment of your own mind. You still think, choose, smell/touch/hear/etc, make goals/plans, have memory and whatnot in a normal dream. This is the reason why we think normal dreams are real. This is due to the area of your brain that applies reason/common sense being turned off, basically. Remember during a normal dream we are not on auto-pilot (even though after waking it seems so), we still make decisions and whatnot. We just don't realize that are decisions are unlimited. In a normal dream you are limited. In a lucid dream your decisions and actions can be endless! Hope this helped.

Nomad, I like to overcomplicate and oversimplify things. It's mental gymnastics.

Thank you Yoshi. I was mostly thinking of my dreams almost as if they were pre-scripted and there's nothing that can be done to change events.

Kanious, I don't believe you can know all that you need to know about anything. I like to increase my knowledge on subjects, spot my hidden assumptions and turn them on their head. Learning - and questioning - the world around us should never end IMO.

Yeah, it is weird how normal dreams are perceived upon awakening. It seems as if they were scripted, but in actuality they are extremely similar to waking life.
