Became lucid in an interesting way

Last night for some reason I had to cross a river. I'm not a great swimmer, I had a backpack on and felt a bit heavy. So I end up sinking slowly.

I know I can swim hard and get back to the surface, and Im terrified of drowning. I consider that I'm going to die.

Then, half out of fear, half out of laziness, I decide it's just a dream, and let myself sink. I end up somewhere else.

This wasn't as rational as when I usually become lucid. The feeling was almost like, "most of the time when I'm dying it's just a dream, so I shouldn't worry."

Hopefully this continues and I become lucid whenever my dreams get too nightmarish.

Anyone else experience this, lucidity as a kind of defense mechanism?

I've never experienced anything like this before, but maybe next time when you are dying and realize its a dream, maybe you should try to change things or try and avoid dying

My sig is having issues getting to the right size

Hm...interesting. Maybe I should have more dreams of dying... . But really, that's pretty interesting.
      ...And then to dream...

I like to breathe underwater and swim around a coral reef.

In fact every time but one you'll be dreaming.

I wasn't dying but my DS (I'm not a materialist!!) fell into a pool and I realized I was dreaming. Does that count??

      Every single time!

I had a similar experience last night.
I was being chased by a vampire that wanted to kill me. Half way through the chase, I thought to myself. 'I am going to die anyway, I might as well be lucid' and with my new found lucidity, I transformed into a werewolf and ripped his face off.

It seems like "this can't be happening" would be a natural reaction to dying, and it is also a good thought to have if you want to realize you're dreaming. I know I've done the same thing several times.

Yeah I have just recently realized that almost every time I have become lucid its because in my dream I was falling and right before I hit the ground I realize that its a dream

I actually die quite often. Usually I die a few times a month. I used to even more. I used have at least a few nightmares a week. Not any more thankfully. Almost in all of my nightmares, I realize I am dreaming. Before I knew about LDs and such, I simply killed myself. Yep, I comminted suicide in my dream. I would see a knife, grab it, and shove it into my heart, or sometimes I would just jump off a cliff. Know I have been trying to be brave and not wreck my dream. I haven't had a nightmare in over a month now!
However, I have had dreams that are a little scary, like I had three times in a row(in one night) last week, I was in my garage and a huge dog suddenly charged up and bit me. I wasn't scared really, I just kind of stood there as it bit me, and it didn't really hurt. I also die in wierd ways. Like just a few weeks ago, I put a firework in our grill, lit it, and closed the lid. Then I sat there for a minute and then realized I should get away. As I was backing up, the thing blew me, and I flew up in the air, and then I realized I was dreaming as I woke up, so I tried to DEILD. Got vibrations, noises, but then they stopped without a dream. Must have been the end of my REM cycle. Does anyone stay in their dream after they die? I only did once, and from a third-person view saw myself being put into a coffin and buried while the fat man that killed me sat in his lawn chair and chuckled.
