are you waking up right after a dream ends? FILDs normally work like DEILDs in that you need to be exiting a dream in order to start it. It's possible to get them off the bat, but they just work better as an alternative to a DEILD. If you find yourself up for longer than a few minutes while trying it, you may as well switch to a more traditional WILD method.

As others have pointed out, it could depend on when you wake up during a dream cycle. If you want, instead of setting your alarm on the hour, and moving it back an hour each time, set it 20 minutes after the hour then move it up from there.
