Thread: My method for having Lucid Dreams/OOBEs

Hello, my name is Clairity and I'm new to the Dream Views board!

In my introduction post MonkeyElk asked what method I used to achieve lucidity. I answered that post but thought I'd also post my methods in the "Attaining Lucidity" forum as well since others might find them helpful.

The method I've used lately is the WBTB method and I'll outline it below:

I get out of bed at 3:30 am and go to sleep on the living room couch. I find that leaving the bedroom and my husband's movement and occasional snoring is very necessary (plus it lets my subconscious know that I am serious about my intentions).

I sit on the couch, I put my earplugs in to ensure that I'm not disturbed by any "external" sounds and I dim the lights.

As I often go OOB when performing my lucidity method.. I hold 5 pieces of quartz in my closed hands and repeat the following protection mantra: "My mind, my body, my soul and my spirit are protected by pure white light. May only those of pure white light come near me, may only those of pure white light touch me." I then place a piece of quartz at each end of the couch and one at each side. I then hold/keep the last piece of quartz in my hand.

I then lay face up on the couch, close my eyes and, for at least five minutes, I concentrate on my third eye while repeating "I am dreaming, this is all a dream" or "I will realize that I am dreaming and I will roll out of my body"

Next I relax my eyes and my body by slowing my breathing. I mentally talk to my subconscious asking for its help with realizing when I am dreaming so that I can become lucid. I ask for help in reminding me to do reality checks and for help remaining within the dream until I wish for it to end and for help in remembering my experiences.

I continue my breathing until my mind starts to drift and I try to think/direct it to only positive thoughts. I also try to envision/daydream something tactile.. such as horseback riding.. i.e., feeling the reins in my hands, the wind on my face, my legs gripping the saddle, etc. Heck now that I type this, I think next time I'll envision myself playing jacks (throwing the jacks on the ground, tossing the ball in the air, scooping up a jack or jacks and then catching the ball).
NOTE: You also want to say to yourself "I am dreaming.. this is all a dream" while becoming involved with the daydream.. this way hopefully you will realize you're dreaming if your mind falls asleep along with your body.

If all goes well (and I don't just totally fall asleep), I feel a familiar "shift/falling" sensation and I wait until I feel it ONCE MORE and then I roll on my right side. I seem to fall asleep only I immediately sense that I'm dreaming and do a reality check (be it plugging my nose and seeing if I can breath or looking at my watch twice and seeing if the time changes).

If the reality checks fail, I either slip into a lucid dream or roll out my body.

There are variations on the above, using either a novadreamer, a dreamspeaker, a penlight, a sound machine, a projection clock, etc but I thought I'd provide the method that you didn't have to buy gadgets to do.

This is probably waaay too long or contains too much info but it always helps me when people are as specific as possible.

Hi Clarity, wow you use alot of methods in one, thats good, I also use some of these methods..I try not to focus too much on leaving the body, I just let it come, and it does, for a while I was leaving my body everyday, or anytime I wanted to, without trying and focus, I suppose I may have trained my mind and body both to do this..
so how long have you had OBE's and how did it first happen, did you learn of them first and than approach them, or did they just began to happen on their own?

Lilac, I had my first oob in 1998 quite by accident. I was trying for a lucid dream using the suneye method and separated instead. I then started reading about them and they just kept occurring (even more frequently than my LDs).

As oob discussions are kind of controversial.. plse PM me for any additional info.

I have a very interesting challenge to all of you who still think that an OBE is real. Have someone put an object in a box without you having seen the object. Make it something very specific without the box being closed so that all you have to do is look into the box when you are experiencing an OBE. If you consistantly can say for a fact what the object is then you are definately experiencing more than an LD. I'm very curious what the results would be, because I am the biggest unbeliever of OBE's. However I am willing to change my mind with honest hard cold facts coming from an experiment.

In that case perhaps you should be the one doing the tests....

Personally I don't believe in OBE's either. I think I've felt the same sensations that are described in OBE's when I WILD because my method often has me floating out of my body into my LD and often begins in my bedroom that looks normal. But because I am lucid, I know it is a dream and not an OBE. I think when some people experience the SP and vibrations, but then end up in a normal dream (instead of a lucid one) where things seem like real life they describe these experiences as OBE's. But that's just my opinion.

yeah I have read many of Laberges books, and he thinks their just lucid dreams, and I suppose that is why so many people don't beleive in obe's everyone is reading these books!!lol I would say to those who are skeptics, don't knock it untill you try it, and also be willing to accept possibliites.

I also know that this can also be done in a LD!! I did that this morning. I looked in my box of cards, looked at the top card, woke up, looked again, & there it was in the accurate spot!! If you all know, there is a such thing as remote viewing!

Around 9:30PM, b/c sometimes it can take me a while to fall asleep (I fall asleep using WILD). If I do not fall asleep during the WILD phase, I may decide to have a Sci-fi (or one of those FA Remote Viewing WILDs)!

If I plan on using the wbtb method, I try to be in bed by 11:30 pm.

From what I've read, Laberge does not believe they are LD's. Seems more like he doesn't believe in them at all and that they are actually just regular dreams. Look at the below excerpt from the link I pasted. And if you read the article it is peppered with phrases such as "OBE-like," "convinced that it is a real event," "people feel as if they are perceiving the real world," etc.... He never says an OBE is when someone leaves the body, but defines it as when someone feels like they leave their body.

I'm not trying to say people who believe in OBE's are nuts. It's just I don't believe in them. I'm not sure how to try them either as you suggest. When I have the experiences that others have described as OBE's I do reality checks and determine I am dreaming every time.

Yeah! I agree w/that! I think that it is absolutely possible to remote view in a LD. It may be looking at an unfamiliar book & its words (I think that it is called Deja VU), or it could be looking down on your relatives. An OBE in my opinion is a NDE, or so I think!

It is all a matter of personal opinion here, and perhaps someday science can prove obe's, untill than, I will take my own experiences and run with them, becuase it only through ourselves we can see the truths of reality, not to be read in any book. or by someone elses thoughts and beleifs but our own, and untill those skeptics experience these things for themselves there should be no judgements, because the truth is differant for everyone.

I am not really a skeptic. I am just really afraid of OBEs....I mean, VERY SCARED OF THEM !
