So close yet so far

I have been trying to attain lucidity for some time now and last night I had a dream that I was walking the streets of London and came across an altercation in which I tried to intervene. A gun was pointed to my head and I pleaded with the man holding the gun to spare me. He then pressed the trigger, but it was out of bullets. I proceeding to run into a disused factory (that was strangley crossed with my old school) that was on the side of the street, and in it I noticed strangely random things that shouldn't be there, such as red buttons and art paintings. It was this, combined with the fact I was running, that made me think to myself 'I AM DREAMING!!!'. Realising that this, lucid dreaming, is what I have been desperate to do for months, the first thing I do is I attempted to fly, only I then realise that I am merely imagining myself flying in the waking state, albeit with my eyes closed in bed! I was distraught! What happened? Did I wake up upon realising that I was lucid? Is that normal? How do I stop myself from doing that in the future?
