Could near death experiences be lucid?

I mean, I believe what all the research has shown us. The brain creates something very similiar to a dream near death, when the brain is dying.

Do you guys think it'd be possible to become lucid during the last few moments of brain activity?

      Just a wild idea..

Do you mean that the only time we are not brain dead is just before we really are brain dead?

joking aside, I have had two visions in my life. Wide awake and doing something really stupid. The visions allowed me to change my actions and continue to live. However, to believe that the mind itself provided information that it could in no wise have is, I believe, counter productive.

Maybe this is far off but I think that when you're close to death your spirit is leaving your body which is why there are soooo many reports of OBE's ( Out Of Body Experiences) when people have a near death experience.

Its just a thought I don't know if you believe in that type of stuff but I like to keep an open mind on these topics after all you never really know. But if this was the case there would have to be some type of connection to being sleep and being dead. Hence the phrase : Life Is But A Dream.

I don't think the NDEs are a type of lucid dream but a OBE where the spirit has began to leave the body. I read a book about it recently (reincarnation) and many people who experience NDEs often recall the same things, such as: a tunnel of light, "beings of light" who project unconditional love and value love and learning above all other things, a life review (the entire life is recounted over in an instant), and a state of "metaconsciousness' where you see your life with totally honesty and understanding and plan out the events of your next incarnation.

One story I thought was quite beautiful was one where a girl explained to the beings of light that she wasn't ready to die and told them she "Hadn't danced enough". They smiled and she woke back up in the hospital, revived by the doctors.

But it raises the question, like Marquis just said, what of the physical body while we are in a lucid dream? Is it nonexistent? What of OBEs vs Lucid dreams?

I think NDE AND OBE are closely related, obviously if you flat line rem stage is out of the question but thats okay cause the majority of obe's happen in non-rem stage. For those who dont have any previous knowledge on obe and ap they will find nde disorienting but will have a understanding that they have died. So in that sense they are lucid to whats happening around them. Those who know about obe and nde could probably prolong the experience if they wanted or use it as a opportunity to learn, however if the body is still functional they will be pulled back to it eventually. just my humble opinion. namaste.

Could you either elaborate or give me some links of stuff to read? This is interesting.

Read Dannon Oneironaut's blog. That guy blows my mind. I agree with everything he says 100%. He's also a Buddhist, as I am, but he's a Tibetan Buddhist. I am of a different sect, but I practice dream yoga.

You can also read the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and google dream yoga and sleep yoga.
