Your best bet is probably to go with your gut feeling.

If the dream character "belongs" to you (my DCs would probably be offended by how possessive that sounds, heh), it's not surprising that you may run into the same character in your dreams later. The same is true if the character belongs to the other person, though - you could just manifest a copy of the character in your dreams when you try to find it. Unless the character exists in a semi-stable form prior to the shared dream, I'm of mind to suggest that both minds work to create the environment. As you seem to suggest, however, it's possible that the character is actually another dreamer - in which case a third mind is involved.

If you're talking to another dreamer and manage to confirm the shared dream with him or her after waking, that settles it, but sorting out the details of which mind a dream character is attached to isn't as clear.

Maybe you should ask the dream character whose mind he's attached to and go with whatever he thinks.

Well in a shared dream there are things that manifest which could represent different aspects of each other individually. You can feel the energy behind the dream characters to know what aspect of your own conciousness they represent. You may not have control over another dreamers dream characters because you are not in direct control of their energy. You could figure out who they belong to by simply asking them. It might also be interesting to ask your dcs questions about you.
