My current view is that people make mistakes in applying their ideas about the physical world to the astral world. There are spirits, so to speak, which are to some degree objectively the same for different people. But where these spirits become experiences, they are modified by the spirits of the people having the experiences. Astral appearances depend strongly on the mindset of the person having the experience. My astral world has almost none of the violent video game quality that's commonly described on this site. My astral experiences aren't more or less real than anyone else's, but I think the fact that they're so different illustrates how personal a lot of this stuff is.
I think we're using the word astral in more than one way too. Using the dream-body vs astral-body nomenclature, a lot of this semi-collective lucid stuff is dream world, not astral. What I call astral is really, really different from a vivid lucid dream. But I also have experiences that don't seem to fall cleanly into either category.
