I just woke up from the most awesome goddamned lucid dream I've ever had. In one part I found a magazine and paged through it. SO. WEIRD. I highly recommend doing this. Words are very strange for me in dreams. If I just sort of glance at some words, they'll look like just garbled nonsense, but if I focus harder on the words, something actually happens where they abruptly become intelligible, almost like my vision was blurred and then becomes focused, but still make very little grammatical/syntactical sense. I of course cannot remember what any of the phrases actually said, which I think might in its own right suggest something about what's going on here, but they were all strangely MashedTogetherLikeThis but also nonsensical, phrases like "BecomeMatterSoonForYou" and stuff like that. It almost seems like you're not actually reading the words, almost seems like you're incapable of actually reading while dreaming, but that somehow your mind just kinda fudges the numbers and allows you to glean some amount of information from what you're seeing. But I still always get the sense that I wasn't actually looking at real words, just gibberish that I was able to interpret. I guess that's all writing is, technically speaking... gibberish you can interpret.

I guess reading in lucid dreams are quite hard then if the words are all gibberish. I really hope that the words in my dreams are clearer though... I really wanted to attempt reading a page in reality and then doing the same in a lucid dream. Oh well. Anyway, I'm guessing you did other things in that lucid dream too, maybe you'll post it in your dream journal? I would be interested in knowing.

very interesting. I once had a non lucid dream that I sat down and read an entire book. It had a plot and a twist and an ending. It was very good. I was hoping to do this again while dreaming.
Another thing I want to do is find a Bible and try to memorize verses. It is hard to find the time in real life, but if I can master some time dilation then maybe I can memorize a good chunk of it.

I use Google Docs for my dream journal. I like the idea of others being able to check stuff out but I don't have the patience to copy it all over, or figure out the dream journal system on this site at all for that matter haha. I'll paste what I got from last night here, though it's not terribly interesting to read. I forgot a lot of the colorful details, or more accurately, I forgot how to really describe them. My dream journal mostly serves to remind me of the memories that are in my own head, which are stored visually, so when read by me it conjures vivid images and memories, but read by you probably just sounds like boring summarizing.

-I start outside this nice house. It’s weird, I go up to the door and it’s open and I can see into the kitchen and there’s a few people in there, like a dad a mom and a daughter. I’m not lucid yet, but somehow I know it’s a dream, because... I call to them, something like, “Hey, just want to let you guys know that I am lucid right now,” and THEN I become lucid, and I say, “send them to heaven” and they vanish. Not sure why I said that. I walk in and look around a bit. There’s a shitload of Pez and Pez wrappers and boxes (Pez boxes??) piled up on the island in the middle of the kitchen that they were frantically moving around, as though all they were ‘cooking’ was Pez. I go to another room and there’s this candy dish and I grab a piece, I think it was a Charleston Chew. I intend to unwrap this piece as I walk around and then eat it, but I was holding it low, outside my field of view, and as I continued walking around it simply forgot to exist. I go up these stairs and there’s a cupboard in the wall at the foot of them, which I open up, but it’s darkish and so I can’t really see or recognize the junk. I go upstairs and around the railing, which wraps around the whole space of the staircase except the wall on the left (left when coming up the stairs). Around where the railing is on its short side, parallel to the top of the staircase opposite it, there are some boxes. I open one and start pulling out jackets and stuff. One I seem to recognize excitedly as being a jacket I had owned in childhood, though on further inspection it was not the same one. I end up going into this bedroom randomly. It’s very messy and there’s junk and clothes all over the floor, including, strangely, basketball shorts. Also there’s this kid sitting on the bed, he says something about basketball... I don’t remember what, and I wake up.

-This dream went on long enough that I don’t remember how I first became lucid. My earliest memory is in this high-ceiling bedroom, which I think is where, or close to where, I became lucid. I check things out a bit and end up looking in this magazine, which is bizarre as hell. At first the text and content all seems to be total gibberish, but when I focus harder it starts to make sense. It’s not quite like anything changes though, just that somehow it makes sense. Almost like the reverse of the process during waking where you stare at or repeat a word enough times and it suddenly looks/sounds really weird. It’s mostly nonsense, weird CamelHumpedSentencesLikeThis but they have weird grammatical structure, like BecomeMatterSoonForYou. After this I’m walking towards like a framed poster, and in the gloss of the plastic or glass covering, I see the movement of my own reflection, but I also see movement like someone is standing or walking up behind me. I turn around, and there’s no one there. I approach the frame and I start trying to press myself through into it. I forget what the picture or poster was. I push my face through into the black space beyond and even reach an arm deep into it, hoping something cool will happen. When I pull out things have become extremely unstable and I think I nearly woke up, but I started rubbing my hands together and everything came back. I’m not sure if everything came back in the next area, this outside sorta dense semi-urban looking area, or if I came back in the bedroom and then found my way outside. So now I’m in this sort of alleyway area, not exactly streets but buildings all around. I approach this one building that is like a gas station or convenience store or something, and some people come out, one is in a wheelchair, and they hurry away out of sight. I keep moving and I see this balcony on this building, so I start trying to fly over to it. Flight is still awkward for me, I find it hard to maintain constantly without having to do... things to keep it going. I get up into the air and then fall back down. Instead I look at the balcony and focus intently on it, sort of willing myself towards it, and then when I jump up I basically fly just right towards it, breaking my flight so that I come falling down in an arc right at it. I miss the balcony a little and crash through the glass and find myself in a fancy sort of bar area. At my right is the bar, and before me is a sort of lounge. The only people around are this man and woman who are sort of cuddled up on a couch, and they’re talking... about their relationship or something, and I get the distinct impression that they are quoting some movie verbatim, in fact I become convinced of it and I know I recognize the lines from some movie. Unfortunately the only thing I really remember is the girl saying something like “But you’re really an asshole,” and the gist of the conversation being that she wants to be with him but acknowledges he’s a horrible dude? I listen in for a few moments then I notice some empty beer bottles on a table. I pick one up and hold it outside my range of vision and say, “Make it a Newcastle,” hoping to replace it with a full, new beer. When I bring it back up, though, it’s only half full, it’s something light like Corona, and it’s not sealed. At this point I start walking towards this door, maybe following someone through, that’s in the wall next to the bar. I say as I’m going, “No, NEWCASTLE! DARK! FULL!” and when I bring it back up it’s the same light, unsealed thing, so I toss it aside instead of trying to drink it, since it being unsealed sorta grossed me out. When I step through this door I’m greeted by a sort of theater venue, reminiscent of the Pantages or many others like it, where standup shows are done a lot. It’s packed with people and it’s dark, and there’s super loud music. It’s like a small rave, or like when a single DJ will have their own show at somewhere like The Music Box. It’s mostly arranged seating and then a floor in the front between the seats and the stage. It’s not too big, and as I walk through I yell, “HOUSE LIGHTS ON!” and the lights come on. I look around and think I see Shane and Staicee, but when I try to go talk to them I lose them in the crowd. The lights seem to go back down and I walk around as the music is booming and the people are partying. I have an idea to try and mess with my phone, so I go into my pocket to try and get it but find that my pocket is very strange indeed. It’s like, I can sort of feel the phone in there somewhere, but it’s like the pocket is twisted up tight and I can’t reach in past the knot? As I do this I randomly spot Mike, who is strangely enough in an Eric Cartman costume. I go up to him and we start walking out of the theater, out this side door and into daylight beyond, all these people walking in a big flowing mass with us. Outside this guy who looked like Angel’s older brother is near us, and I poke him on the shoulder and try to confuse him, saying “Hey man, you’re tripping out!” I was going to try and do something impossible and see his reaction, but he immediately interrupts me, saying something like “No way, man, you’re not even on anything!” to me, confusing in its own right, and then, sadly, I wake up. That’s what I get for trying to interact with DCs!

That was AWESOME! I kind of visualized the whole thing, though I'll never be able to see the dream like you did, sadly. I hope I will achieve a lucid dream that is this cool. How much time do you estimate this dream lasting?

I don't understand the question. Do you mean testing reality in dreams or finding solutions to problems in them?

I think OP means testing the limits. I think we have yet to find a single limit in lucid dreaming. Even when your imagination runs short your mind seems to come up with its' own crazy new thing.

Both.

I'm not sure, I have no idea how people figure that out. It's really hard for me to estimate time in lucids or non-lucids. I think my perception of time gets heavily distorted. I do a lot but I tend to move pretty quickly so... maybe ten minutes? No more than 20 probably. Time is weird in dreams for me.

Even if it was a 10 minute lucid dream that is still pretty good I think.
