This happened to me about three years ago...and it still makes me feel extremely weird.
Maybe you guy's will help me out with an answer?

I was on an airplane, going to Alaska with my families. We were in the southern part of Alaska, the Jueno (sp?) area.
Around there, there is a place with about a million small lakes. Kind of like that one place in the 1st Narnia book, only without the trees.

So there were tons of small lakes on this plain. Kinda...swampish? Reminds me of the Marshes in The Lord of the Rings....
As I was staring out the window, I was extremely sleepy, but I didn't want to sleep because the view was amazing. I loved looking at the water....
FLASH!
I was standing on the plain, looking into the water. Or was it me?
Suddenly I heard a voice, speaking words I cannot remember. It was like a whisper. The tone was serious, as if a warning...
I looked up and saw the plane I was in, and
FLASH!
I jumped in my seat.
It was as if someone had shocked me. I would have fallen off the seat if not for my seatbelt.
I felt so dazed, lost, and totally confused. I was so frantic I was nearly paranoid.

So, what do you guys think? I have no clue at ALL what it was, but I do know that it felt so real, but so sudden and flashy, like a movie or something...

Really hard to tell was it in real life or dream state? Sounds like you were day dreaming. Or maybe you wanted to be there as yourself.

I'm sure it wasn't a normal daydream...
In a daydream, you gently go into a dreamlike state, and you can be easily awoken.
And it was more like a daymare than a dream =P

But...aaugh...I can't explain it. There was this...feeling I felt the whole time. I can't for the life of me describe it...
It was like...numb...bending time and space...screaming under water...holding my breath...lucid dreamy...
feeling...

Armageddon, you aren't alone. Three months ago, I got on an airplane to fly 1/2 way around the earth (USA to The Netherlands). I was already very stressed out so I didn't sleep much for few weeks and didn't sleep at all that night before I left for an overnight flight. Anyways, I was up for 24-48 hours that time (I lost track of time because I was already seriously sleep deprived).

I did not sleep on the airplane at all... the view was too amazing. I had the rare opporunity to see sun going away and coming up on the same flight. It was purely breath-taking. I also had an opportunity to view a powerful thunderstorm from above at nighttime. It was beyond beautiful. I got to see many thing like canada, uk, and part of usa that I never touched. So, you can imagine, I never wanted to sleep even though I was crashing. Although, I didn't "jump" to the site I was viewing at... I had a similiar experience later after the airplane.

I was touring in Amsterdam and after that, we drove for two hours to get home. It was nighttime... I began to hallunicate so bad that I see weird words on the reflecting electric signs. Then all of a sudden, I am back on the airplane viewing the most amazing sunset scene while flying in circle... and at the same time, the car's dash and window frame still existed in my view. It was almost like the car was flying (lucky I wasn't driving haha). At first, I precieved it to be normal... suddenly I realized that car cannot fly and I thought to myself, "Oh my god, I am hallunicating with my eyes open!" I looked around lucid... it was so real. I got scared. The details were very solid as if I was lucid dreaming inside the reality if that make any sense. I thought maybe I am driving and I fell asleep without knowing it... I started to panic and suddenly I jumped back to my normal vision. I realized that I wasn't driving and that I was still having my eyes open during that hallunication. It startled me and still is stuck in my head now. To me, it was very real. It wasn't like a daydream at all.

Maybe your brain was too tired to block that dream state; hence, you remotely projected yourself there? I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. I can relate from my recent experience... I don't know if it's the same, but I can see some similiars.

I used to do a lot of long distance driving and once had a heavy hallucination session when I was very sleepy: roadside bushes morphing into people, a road bridge morphing into a giant lorry etc.

These things can happen when you are very sleepy. It's nothing to panic about, nothing extremely weird. Nothing paranormal either, although for some it might look like that. Sometimes our brain just acts funny you know .

Hm, I guess your right. Maybe this is just a strange hallucination cuz I was sleepy...
I was sleepy, I can assure you that =P
But...OH! I have a perfect way toe explain it.

Do any of you guys watch the show "LOST"?
It's a lot like when the characters of the show get these crazy visions and stuff-
Like when Charlie had to save Aaron from drowning, and when he gets back he sees Claire and his mother telling him to do "save Aaron, he's in danger", while everything seems chaotic and the sun is red.

It was more like that. The whole...feeling of it, it didn't SEEM real. It wasn't like I was sleeping either...
You know that feeling you get, when everything is totally TOTALLY silent...
And suddenly you hear this soft hum?
It was that 'soft' hum that suddenly exploded and ran throughout my body...
Man i have a hard time explaining this >_<

You mean this?

When I read the title of this thread I thought of that episode of The Twilight Zone with William Shatner.

Yes, something along those lines =P
And FYI, it didn't scare me as much as it made me crack up x3

And no, ther were no creepy monsters on the wing of the plane this time ^_^

sounds like an OBE to me. you were tired and probably entered a hypnagogic state of mind, and then simply left your body by having the intent of rest and seeing the cool view.

Yeah, I know what you mean! For me, that's when my lucid hallunication began. There was a silence and before I knew it... I could hear a soft hum that exploded through my body and that's when I hallunicated that the car was flying high in the sky. After that hallunication, I was in shock because the buzz was pretty heavy and it actually woke me up for rest of the trip.

I can see why you could've think it was a paranormal thing because of that buzz, but I am still on that your brain was so tired that it didn't block you from dreaming... giving you REM waves that is. You were in a trance already due to your sleep deprivation and in that trance, many strange things can happen. I still do not believe it was an OBE though. Just a projection. It's a huge different thing...

It's like watching tv to learn more about USA with projection when with actual OBE itself, you go to USA yourself and experience it first-hand. I hope I am making some sense...

Ah, so I'm not the only one who hears the hums!

Hm, you're probably right, since it sounds like the exact same thing happened to you.

But- try to wrap this around your brain-
On airplanes, they provide oxygen for you, right?
I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it-
With the whole Cabin Pressure deal...

I had an experience sort of like this but not to that magnitude. I was on a plane and was awake.. I don't ever remember falling asleep. Anyway, the airplane person said "We are now approaching Toronto." and I had heard "We are now cockroaching Toronto!" and next thing I know there are giant cockroaches wearing parachutes walking single file up the line and jumping right out of the side of the plane!

may it be Stendhal syndrome?

it's something that happens to travellers that see too amazing art or landscapes, and the landscape you describe view from a plane can be i suppose really amazing!
