      ..I'm going to dream instead.

I came to this conclusion last night while high as a kite. We, all of us, "go to sleep" and then hope that we'll dream sometime during that period. Most of us, I believe, see sleep as the flipping of the switch, the off button for the body as it were. Being that our minds are oh so literal and suggestive we are turning off until morning. So I began to think about that phenomenon that I wrote about in another thread, about lying there NOT sleeping and suddenly remembering a dream you just had... while not sleeping. Well now, if that's not nearly the exact definition of a WILD I'll be dipped in dogshit. Then I thought about my Dad, the same thing happens to him, he's always complaining about not being able to sleep. I think this is paradoxical to a certain extent, but maybe he can't sleep only because he wants to. What if, instead, he just went to dream. Go WILDing (or at least attempting to) for 8 hours (or however long you would normally sleep) a night. I think he'd be surprised to find out how difficult it can be to NOT sleep on purpose.

So, from now on I'm going to attempt to WILD each and every time I go to bed. No more sleeping! Sleep is the enemy! The good news is that the older you are the easier this is to do, it's common knowledge that as we get older we need less sleep, but if we still "put in the time" as it were we can WILD more and more. Sounds easy.

So I put it to the test last night, no sleeping, only dreaming. I got sooo relaxed, kept my mind all emptied out, got some HI, even did the rubber chicken (I thought I was damned near there&#33 and probably fell asleep in less than 20 minutes. Doh! I guess this is going to take a little bit of practice huh? Why am I so surprised? It took me 37 years to learn how to fall to sleep, stands to reason it may take awhile to learn how not to.

So that's it, I'm never going to sleep again, I'm going to dream. If sleep happens along the way well then bonus. But I'll never go to sleep on purpose again, so long as I live. If last night was any early indication I doubt that I'll experience any sleep deprivation, if at all. Also, it's not like I'm doing this at the exclusion of every other method either, after I've failed at my WILDing it's not like all bets are off, I can still have any/all other kinds of dreams while I sleep. So anyone else who wants to jump on-board and try it with me start tonight, I'll only have one day on you. We can post our results here daily.

      Dream on!

but is it possible to go straight into a lucid dream first thing of the night? I thought you didn't dream during the first few sleep cycles, not until REM at least?

I like the way you think, Phydeaux. I think I'll give this a try. Maybe it'll break my dry spell...

Yeah, I've had something like that.
Usually that happens when I have insomnia and I feel horrible, particularly cause I'm tired and I expect sleep. I expect that I would be tired tomorrow, that I would have to go through the day feeling bad.... I remember trying to remove expectations of that several days ago and I was just laying there thinking. I remember slipping in and out of dreams, but the moment I tried to focus on what I dreamt about, I couldnt remember a thing.

That's the biggest problem with dreaming while awake - the recall is not "standard dream recall", so unless there's a technique to recall such dreams I think it would be problematic to achieve lucidity that way...

And what's stopping the experts here from developing a technique for daydream recall?

I regret not seeing this topic earlier; I may try this with you.
      LD Count: 7
Longest time in a lucid dreamstate: ~6 seconds

Still, the most epic six seconds I have ever experienced...

Yes. However, people can actually stay conscious during these stages. I forget how, but very few can do it. If you could do this you could stay conscious right up until your REM sleep hits.

So, we'll chalk this one up to "carefull what you wish for" I guess. Last night I dreamt all night, barely "slept" at all (or at least it seemed that way) and in the morning I felt like total garbage. Not only that but I barely remembered any of the dreams at all. Talk about farg'd up. When I got up this morning my eyes were so red it looked like I just smoked a buncha joints. Took forever to shake the still half-asleep feeling (even after 2 coffees & I almost never drink the stuff&#33. So, to conclude, unless you're very proficient at WILD'ing AND you have excellent dream recall probably best not to try this method. Hardly worth it IMHO. Maybe when my recall is better I'll give it another whirl.

So, from now on I'm going to attempt to WILD each and every time I go to bed[/b]
Even if you were succesfull, your first few dreams would be very short since your REM periods increase as the night progresses. Also, by doing this you're keeping your mind from going through the first stages of sleep which are essential for your body to heal (specially in stage III). Sleeping isn't just rest. Your mind AND body do things while you're still in the night.

but is it possible to go straight into a lucid dream first thing of the night? I thought you didn't dream during the first few sleep cycles, not until REM at least?[/b]
Correct, the Wake Back To Bed technique is a technique in which you wake up during the night, stay up for a bit, then go back to bed. Your brain at this point will tend to zip through the first couple stages and right into REM. This is the best time to try WILD because you wouldn't have to stay up so long and "wait" till you fell asleep. To get to this point, however, you must go through a couple sleep cycles first. It's really difficult to do right at the onset of going to bed.

Yes. However, people can actually stay conscious during these stages. I forget how, but very few can do it. If you could do this you could stay conscious right up until your REM sleep hits.[/b]
This stage you're referring to is really where you end up when you're in meditation. It's really tied in with your brainwaves. These few people you talk about are people who practice meditation and have a good grasp on it.

When you meditate, you slow down your brainwaves, down to the levels they would be when you're "asleep". Meditation is the ability to stay "conscious" during while your brainwaves are at these levels.

But, but but... NREM is good for you! And if you don't get enough NREM, it's just going to rebound, you know.

Or at least, I think that's what you're talking about.

When sleeping during the night, you go repeadetly through a "sleep cycle" that contains both REM (dreaming) and non-REM sleep. Both parts are vital for your health and well-being, so it isn't going to be a good idea to deprive yourself of non-REM sleep. It will only backfire on you sooner or later.

I'd be really interested to hear what happens with this. I know like many people I have guesses on how it'll turn out but I think I'll try to keep an open mind! Good luck
