EXPERIMENT: Using an IRL video game controller to control a dream

This year is really the first time I've been "practicing" lucid dreaming since I was in 5th grade, and now I'm in college, so its been a while. But this time I'm much better at actually becoming lucid, I've actually had about 19 this year, (of varying degrees of quality)!

Problem is, nowadays I'm kind of inept at doing a lot of the things I acutally want to do in my LDs.

In my younger days I was an expert shapeshifter. Now, not so much.

I was also good and teleporting to wherever I wanted to go, not anymore.

All the solutions i've been given to try here are difficult for me to try. For example, for shapeshifting, someone suggested to stand in front of a mirror and watch yourself change, only nowadays I cant even summon a mirror.

I've also been told to summon the person/creature/thing I want to become and possess it, only when I call out for it no one responds or comes.

I've tried using a magic wand to summon, but of course first I have to generate a magic wand, which I've done successfully only once.

As for teleporting, I've tried walking through normal doors expecitng to be someplace new and that dosen't work. I've also tried to summon Warp Pipes as in Super Mario to teleport but in my experience I can only do this successfully If I have a wand to use, which in itself is a problem.

The only things I'm able to use in my dreams are things that I'd actually have on my person or in my house in real life. For example, once I left a brown bottle marked "lucidity potion" on my kitchen table for me to use in an actual dream, whcih worked great.

Another example is the bracelet I wear that I double check the text on to see if it changes or not, that actually shows up in dreams, also, once I left a "magic ring" for myself on my night table, that worked great too. Once I was using a small card with some text on it to reality check and kept it in my pocket all day so it would be there in my dreams too.

Also, in a lot of my non-lucid dreams, especially unfun/nightmareish ones, I'll actually see a "A" button with the word Abort on it appear "on screen" like it was a video game that I somehow "press" that causes me to instantly wake up.

So, what I've decided to do is carry with me a video game controller in my pocket IRL, the idea being that once I become lucid in a dream I could reach into my pocket expecting to find it already there so I dont have to summon it.

Then I could execute all the focus intensive dream functions I have trouble doing manually by pressing the buttons. I think this will work for me since I know from experience that once I have a magic item or potion that will do the desired task for me, I can make it happen instnatly just by using or drinking it.

Here is the controller I'm going to carry with me:

      It's a Nintendo Wii Remote.

I'm using this one because its the only controller I have thats tiny enough to put in my pocket, is cordless, and has few buttons to get things mixed up with. Plus, I happen to have a non functional "dummy" model that was used as a display peice at a Nintendo show, so that would be great for this.

I even went so far as come up with a pre decided "control" scheme so I can press specific buttons and expect a set effect to occur so hopefully the outcome will be less random in the dream when i try this.

      CONTROLS:

A Button: Point remote at self or any DC and press A to transform myself/DC into whatever creature I am thinking of.

B Button: Teleport to wherever I am thinking of

D Pad - Press to make whatever thing/person I am imagining materialise before me

+/- Buttons: Like "Tracking" on a VCR remote, used to adjust dream clarity (I hope this one works really good )

      Home Button: Teleport Home

      1: Warp to Train Station
2: make train arrive at platform

(dont ask about thse two )

Hopefully tonight I'm going to see if this works or not.

Thats pretty interesting. Never thought about carrying a WII remote with me in a dream. Although thats kind of like someone elses idea of the keyboard in a dream where you hit CTRL+F and then type in what you are looking for and it will guide or something to that effect.

Well if you Wii remote idea does work you gotta let us know your results XD.

      Ha, that's really geeky.

      High five!

Awesome idea, let us know how it turns out. That actually gives me some really cool ideas for when I actually achieve lucidity.

It was a no go last night.

Pity, becuase I actually had a pretty good SP trying to latch itself to me, which I instinctually shook off, (which I'm pretty good at), but by the time I remembered "duh, you can use it to your advantage" it wouldn't come back.

Thats a great, simple use of placebo =D

One thing you might want to do is designate a button to summon another controller with other functions.

And if it doesn't work the first time, hit it against something.

Interesting. I've never thought about any of that, not even the keyboard idea. I hope it works for ya.

ooh, sounds cool! I might try this myself. You've got to think of a use for the wii's motion sensing capabilities, though...

It worked sort of. I tried it a few times, but I still need to concentrate, but just having a "prop" helps a lot.

I neex to practice some more.

It sounds like it will become more efective over time. However you might end up dependant on the remote if you get too good with it. BTW, where can I get a dummy wiimote so I can try this?

This sounds very interesting. Keep up with it. If it is successfull, I might try it when I actually can have a lucid dream. :p

Folks, it sounds like whatever you can get your subconsious to accept, will work. How about programming language then? Or spellsinging? ...This is where an active imagination and sci-fi become handy I imagine.

This sounds like a really good Idea! I may just try it with a regular remote. You know, tv. Since it has more buttons it would be useful for more things, too. I just have to be able to get an LD first...

Hmm sounds a bit like my idea for a "dream glove"

My wrist has a fairly large, bulky octagonal ring around it. There is an anchor charm on a tiny silver chain and a button on the wrist part, and if I press the button, the anchor shoots out and sticks to the air thus "anchoring" myself to the dream.--
But of course, I have the same problem with summoning it. I may need to make a physical model to keep it in my memory... But I'm definately trying that lucidity potion.

      .:edit:.
I just made it! I found an old plastic toy test tube, filled it with water, and labeled it "Lucidity Potion," but what I don't get is why it's fizzing if I just put tap water in...

That's a great idea. The only suggestion I can give is that you find a new control scheme. What I would use:

A and D-pad: Used to scroll between a menu that pops up (holographic, or however you wish to interpret it) when you press A or the D-pad. Options would be whatever you needed at the time, so if for example you wanted to fly, there would be an option saying, "fly", or "grow wings". There would also be options to transform the Wiimote and a cancel option.

B trigger: Instantly fires a laser at whatever you're pointing at. The laser disappears when you let go. As long as the laser is active, you can move objects of any size just by waving the Wiimote around, like in Elebits. If you're trying to grab a fast-moving object, the laser can home in if you want it to.

      - button: Instantly deletes whatever you're pointing at.

+ button: Summons any object you want. Can also undo deletion.

Home: Teleports you to a familiar location. Ex, a beach, or a grassy field.

1: Turns slow-mo on and off.

      2: Not sure.

Either way this is a great idea, and I'll definitely try it when I get a chance.

What I'd do is bring an extra pair of batteries, because we all know how quick those Wii Remotes run out of batteries during games. Might leak into subconscious. In fact, I'd make sure to exclusively put the battery in and see the spark, before using it. Just to make sure it was fully charged.

I had a post not long ago about this. The idea was to get a Universal remote control (like the one from click) but without all the scary side effects like in the film. It's funny i should find this post today because i was thinking of using my sky plus remote because it has forward, rewind and pause. Also i was thinking of using the colours for specific things. Also i would not have to summon it because i 9 times out of 10 i become lucid in my old house or my new house which both have sky plus.

      Might give it a try.

@Captain Sleepalot: Nice. Sometimes I wish controllers had cool powers like that. It's fun for goofing around with siblings in real life, too. The NES Power Glove would probably shoot plasma from the fingertips, and either ice, fire, or energy balls from the palm (depending on what button you press).

The NES controller is light, pointy, and aerodynamic. Makes a fun shuriken.

The wiimote is my new favorite, though. It could act as a lightsaber or nunchucks.

The super nintendo controller is too round to use as a weapon... The zapper gun works great, though.

Anyway, back to lucid dreaming. I had a low level lucid last night (I was trying to WILD, but fell asleep and ended up with an unsatisfactory MILD) in which I summoned my wiimote. Nothing worked, and I woke up soon after summoning it. D:

Aw, man. I had a lucid dream this morning and I was thinking of pulling the remote out of my pocket but somehow this thought didn't carry out to the action. I would have loved to test it out.

But even if I did, I wouldn't have been able to think what to do with it. I can't even figure out what I'd do in a lucid dream right now.
