That sounds like a challenge! I may not be able to solve your problem in in easy answer, but I'm sure I can help overcome it.
If you sleep on your side just want to eliminate this all together without confronting it in your dreams, then the best solution might be to only sleep on your right side.
That dream sounded pretty abstract, and those are spawned in the so called Right Brain (Left side of your body). Sleeping on your side gives better blood flow to one side of your brain, making it more dominant.
Sleeping on your right side and activating the left brain will ensure more logical, sequential dreams.

This could be a lot of things, and I'll need some clarification as to what kind of darkness it is.
I've come across a number of dreamers on the net who sometimes go blind when they become lucid. They can still hear and feel things, they just can't see.
Another common one is the void, where the dreamer is floating in a black void. There's nothing in it. Can occur anytime, but often in the transitional sleep phases, falling asleep or waking.
Or perhaps the edge of the world scenario, where the dreamer just comes across a huge black wall of nothing, with nothing on the other side.
There's also moving balls of shadows and stuff, so as you can see a lot of people have had to deal with all kinds of darkness. I'm sure there is some advice on this site somewhere that can help you.

Again that part brings to mind several possibilities. Many dreamers report feeling vibrations. Mostly while falling aspeep, but occasionally in dreams as well. These vibrations can be very intense, uncomfortable and even painful. If that sounds like what you feel, you should do a search on this site for the word vibrations.
If what you're feeling is really hard to put into words, it might be like the dreams described in this thread: http://dreamviews.com/community/showthread.php?t=29794
You may want to see if any of that sounds familiar, but to me I describe it like your soul being ripped out, or at least that how i imagine having your soul ripped out would feel.

Not being able to wake up in a lucid is actually pretty rare, and many lucid dreamers have to fight to stay asleep. I've noticed from these boards that people have a natural tendency to wake up when they die in a dream, so I successfully used that the last time I couldn't wake myself up.
As for the pain, if it's just a normal literal electric pain, is that pain requires your attention to exist. That is to say you have to be focused on it. (That applies to everything in dreams really)
From what I've read in people's DJ and from my own experience, if you're distracted by something else, you won't feel pain, even if your skin is hanging off you in tatters. Usually because the dreamers are focused single mindedly on running or fighting for their lives.
The point is, if you're feeling pain in your "physical" body, remember you don't even need a body at all. Leaving your body or just becoming energy or spirit or whatever you want should be easy with that kind of painful motivation. And it sounds like you've got lots of time to try it.

I know all about anger, and I don't think that has much to do with it. Powerful emotions are a strong force in shaping your dream, but only the ones you are currently experiencing.
Do you experience any super intense emotions in the dream leading up or during that 'lectric darkness?
As for the split personality thing, yes and no. I happen to think dreaming is all about where and how you focus your attention, and also on what you focus your attention on. Problems arise in dreaming when that attention becomes unbalanced. Too much and things grow out of proportion and overwhelm, too little and things become unstable, confusing.
My completely unprofessional opinion is that most mental illness is caused by the same thing, and that every one experiences the whole range of mental illness in their dreams at some point in their lives.
