      Two Halves of One Mind

This is my first post here, so let me know if there is anything I did wrong or anything that would help.

A man stands in a clean white room. He's wearing a half suit with dark blue jeans. He looks toward the sky as a massive letter opener comes down and begins to slice him vertically down the center. Both halves of the man face each other and extend their hand to shake the other. (The man on the right has been mirrored so he is flesh side to me and the two halves appear identical) As soon as their hands meet, the man on the right begins to burn. Fire starts at his hand, travels up his arm, down to his feet and up his torso, engulfing his head. The man on the left stands unaffected. The jeans on the man to the right begin to ash away and a few holes appear, and his suit jacket falls to the ground as a pile of ashes, revealing my favorite t-shirt. The halves of the man turn to me (Man on the right is mirrored back) and mold together, half in a suit jacket and dark blue jeans, the other in a burning shirt and torn pants.

I think I know what this dream means so this is my interpretation. (Note: I believe there is a God, I believe there are angels and demons that walk among us. I won't preach to you, if you don't preach to me)

The letter opener is obvious to me. I am a writer, and I have a heart for the handwritten word above the typed word.

I have always felt there is two sides to me. A good and a bad, an angel and demon if you will. I know this and the sides often fight for dominance, and it can easily affect my daily life. I have been in a conflict with which side I should choose and live my life as, and I believe this dream is showing me my options.

The burning half of me seems like it would be the demon in me. The torn shirt and jeans, the flame, the darkness. The half-suit side seems like it would be the angel, the positive, the accomplished. The part that confuses me is about how the man starts in the half-suit. Just before I fell asleep I was listening to the song 'Justify" by Scott Stapp. In the song he speaks of a man he met, who was wearing a half-suit and dark blue jeans. The man in the song was a man of the devil.

That got me thinking, if the man in the half-suit was the devil, then that means that the burning t-shirt and jeans was the angel. Why would the angel be on fire? To me it seems as though it's as if that half is a hell bound angel, or a fallen angel. A good heart and soul, but forsaken long ago by God.

Hmm, very interesting! Another interpretation is the two parts of your brain, left and right. How the left part is the logical one and the right is the creative. It's weird though because the left brain controls the right side of our body, and the right controls left. I don't necessarily think that this dream meant it in that way, but the song does influence your dreams.

It sounds like you have a clear idea of the two sides being those of good and evil. It's hard for anyone else to say whether that applies to the dream or not, so let's run with your hypothesis. Note that traditionally the left side was evil and the right good - but only you will know if that applies here.

What do you think fire means? It doesn't sound especially destructive here, with just outer clothes burining. It could be purifying, or it could mean anger or guilt (the fire burning within), or indeed it could relate to hell and damnation. The appearance of your favourite shirt suggests to me that you don't recognise yourself in this man at first.

Your last paragraph sounds like you're lost in confusion about what is good and what is evil. Like, you're not sure which parts of your self and your life might be good and which are bad. Does that sound like anything you can relate to? Sometimes it's easy to over-analyse small parts of dreams like these and miss the real story, though. Dreams can't always be as accurate as we like, and left/right might change over for no apparent reason for example.

For me the story has to be the man splitting into two distinct parts then coming together again. Like you see good and evil co-existing, perhaps unavoidably so, and disguised by clothing so you can't see the two parts separately.

One possible explanation of the angel half being on fire is, that the fire could represent the Holy Spirit, as when the Disciples were touched by the holy spirit in the form of tongues of fire.
