If an EEG can detect all stages of sleep... how hard is it to find a device that will wake you after each REM sleep cycle?! Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this what every dedicated person who wants to recall their dreams is looking for?
People seem to have varying amounts of success with dream recall and certain techniques, but it seems to me that waking up right after REM seems to be completely possible, and the best way to consistently assure high-probability recall.
I have used my iphone application "Sleep Cycle" to monitor my body movements at night, and have had a small amount of success waking up during lighter sleep with recall ability. If this sleep information is at all helpful, it shows I have different patterns of sleep almost every night (although I do wake between 3:45 and 4:15 just about every night). I sleep and wake at the same time every night, but always get inconsistent results.
Devices such as Zeo seem like they have potential but have no function for REM Alarms, and products like the REM-Dreamer sleep mask get very mixed reviews (the few I did find). After asking Zeo support about a REM wake function, they said many customers have requested this feature but it is not supported.
I'm upset that my only (unrealistic) option would be to buy a real EEG system and write custom software for it to wake myself after each major REM cycle...
Grrrr... better step up my mantra. =P
