I've been having the strangest phenomenon lately. It's definitely happened before but not as frequently as now. Maybe TRYING to remember my dreams has caused it. . . here it is.

I'll have a dream. There won't be anything extraodinary about the dream but some aspect of the dream will be familiar. When I wake up I will not only remember the dream I just had but also 1 or 2 dreams that I had YEARS ago and didn't remember until this moment.

Here's an example. I dream that I'm locked in a basement and Tobey Maguire (spiderman) is keeping me prisoner. He wants us to get married but he won't introduce me to his mom. When I wake up from this dream I remember that this is not the only dream I've had with Tobey Maguire in it. I remember that I had a dream 6 months ago in which Tobey Maguire also played my lunatic boyfriend. BUT I had not remembered that dream until just that moment.

Here's another. I'm in an unfinished storage building and I'm being chased by gang members with baseball bats. When I get to the top of the building I go through a door and I'm suddenly in a mall. This mall building (which is not a building I can ever remember being in) sparks a memory when I wake up of two other dreams that I didn't remember until that moment AND two dreams that I had remembered when I had them but then forgotten about because I had never written them down.

Before I became serious about keeping track of dreams to attempt to become lucid. . . I didn't find this peculiar but now that I'm trying to remember and analyze my dreams I'd like to see if any one else has had a similar experience.

As one last side note I was wondering if this could also be connected to another phenomenon that I've also never given much thought to. Sometimes when I'm dreaming I'll have memories of other dreams that were similar. For instance last night I had a dream that I was a child and I was in a crawl space that led to a secret room in my house. The imagery was completely new but I have had dreams in the past where I've done the exact same thing and I rememebered one dream in particular WHILE I was crawling around in there. I'm not sure if I remembered it AS a dream or as something I thought had really happened. It was just a flash. . . but again I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

I wasn't sure whether to put this in the recall or the recurring dreams section as it seems to fit both.

I know exactly what you are talking about. sometimes i won't know if i remembered certain dreams that night or they are from before.

the subtlest things can trigger dream recall.

i suggest getting an adopter, or someone that could go over your dream journal and give you suggestions.

I don't know if I want to be adopted. . . if I only get to pick my "parent" once I would want to make sure that the person I picked was right for me and then later if I decided I didn't like the person I would be in a pickle. . . better just to be an orphan

The help would definitely be useful but I can get that from random people on the board too without being adopted by any one person right?

Actually, the idea of "adoption" is really flexible. You can pick who you want to be adopted by, for starters. If you so choose, you could be adopted by more than one person, though that rarely happens. And if the adoption isn't working out, or the person you were adopted by "drops off" the boards, you're totally free to cancel the adoption, or find somebody else. As long as the adopter is even remotely half-reasonable, he or she won't be offended - perhaps you have decided to change adopters because you felt you learnt a lot from the adopter you had, and you felt like you could learn different things from somebody else.

The adoption program worked out extremely well for me, and I still stay in contact with my adopter, Gwendolyn, on both LD-related stuff, and personal stuff - for me, my adopter is a friend as well as a person to seek LD advice from.

So, just keep the adoption program in mind. It's really quite flexible, and you don't have anything to lose.

Well since everyone seems to think it's a good idea I guess I'll go ahead and look for a "parent".

      EDIT:

      Oh nevermind . . . . I don't qualify. . . /pout

      Maybe later then.

I just wanted to say something else about adoption.

I've only been on this forum for 4-5 days now so I'm not elligible to be adopted yet. Until today I didn't really care one way or the other about it. BUT last night I had my first lucid and I had A LOT of trouble with it. I wasn't sure what was considered "easy" or "hard" . . . (the first thing I tried to do was a difficult sort of thing I found out today) and now I'd really like to have someone I could ask about all that stuff. . . maybe someone to give me assignments for the next time I reach lucidity. Someone who knows what I should try so I can test my boundaries . . . someone to help me with things I find difficult. I've read LOADS of posts on this forum about dream control and I still feel a bit lost in the woods. . .

Trying to ATTAIN lucidity was the easy part really. People give step by step instructions for that. There's a million different methods to try and it can be a little daunting at first but there are definite boundaries. Once you're in, the world is your oyster. . . only you can't seem to get the oyster to appear. . . and when it does it latches onto your toe and you can't get it off. . . then when you hit it with a brick it cracks open. . . but the pearl is missing.

Fair enough. Well, personally, I haven't had enough decent-length lucids to know much about dream control as it applies to me personally. But, I think the general gist of it is this, from what I've gathered:

Dream control is all about expectation.

The idea is to get used to having what you expect to happen, actually happen. At first, then, try to do things that you'd expect to happen in real-life. For instance, try pulling various everyday objects out of your pocket, like a wallet, or some change, or a comb, or something. Also, try to shy away from changing things "intantaneously", like, insto-changeo, hey presto, *poof* type stuff.

Instead, try to make ways that what you want to happen, can happen, but that it's not stretching logic too much. Like, if you want to go somewhere, instead of just instant teleportation, try to open a door. Or, in the case of your pants, try taking off the ones you have, and expecting the ones you want to be underneath.

You CAN make the instant magic stuff happen, but, you've got to first build a solid habit in your head, a clear association between expectation, and stuff actually happening.

That makes sense. I've read afew things today that said similar things . . . at the time it was infuriating. (and jeez did those purple pants look silly)

I think one thing I'll definitely take into the future is this. . . if at first you don't succeed STOP TRYING IT THAT WAY OR YOU'LL JUST PISS YOURSELF OFF. . . instead find a new method. . . like you suggested with the removing of the pants to find the new layer underneath. (with my luck I'd take off my pants and find a pair of hairy gorrilla legs underneath though )

Keeper, why is your sister in america? That's where I am so she and I already have something in common.

Well the second thing happens to me quite a lot, but the first thing, about remember other dreams after you wake up, doesn't happen to me.

I always seem to have two sets of memories, the ones from when I'm asleep, and the ones from when I'm awake. When I'm asleep I seem to only remember the dream memories. For example, I keep on dreaming about going back home, and in my dream I think "Wow, I sure am coming home a lot recently, it must be costing me a fortune in plane tickets." I am not going home at all in real life, but in my dream, the dream memories are the only real memories. It doesn't always happen like this, but often enough that I notice it
