Yep, you can meditate in whatever position is comfortable/relaxing for you, as long as you feel that it won't be relaxed enough to fall asleep while meditating (unless that's your goal of course). Also, you can write down your mantra or picture it in your head if you want, but what I do is just say the phrase over and over in my head, like just the words.
