Just finished reading a phenomenal book - Ubik by Philip K Dick. This was kinda my introduction to his works, and I definitely plan on reading more. A whole bunch of sci-fi movies are based off his books and short stories (such as "Blade Runner", "A Scanner Darkly", "Minority Report, "Total Recall", "Adjustment Bureau" etc. I highly recommend Ubik to anyone fascinated by the surrealism and philosophical aspects of dreams. I found it to be a predecessor to "Inception" but with more horror and comedy elements.
Basically, without spoiling too much, its about a futuristic society (in 1992 lol) where telepaths and pre-cognatives (people who predict the future) abound. There is also a technology (called "half-life") which allows humans to be preserved in low temperatures after their deaths and have limited communication abilities with those still living. While their dead bodies are being preserved, their minds are still active and they basically wander around inside their heads, creating their own environments and worlds. It gets really interesting when the protagonist and a bunch of other characters find themselves in half-life without knowing how they necessarily got there. Everything around them starts to decay and revert to older time periods (for example, their hover cars revert to cadillacs and then to model Ts) and the protagonist starts trying to figure out why this is so. The ending is simply mind-blowing!!!!
Anyone else read this book?
