In "list your fav rpg" type-discussions, Tales of games are generally not strongly represented, if at all. Basically the only one that gets mentioned ever is ToS, the one that some people actually bought. It is unfortunate due to the quality of the games I have mentioned (Abyss, Legendia), particularly Abyss which is an exceptional game. However it'd be rare to see it listed for the fact that most PS2 owners already have a huge selection of RPGs available for their platform. If I'm not mistaken, a FF game was released around the same time as Abyss, which was left in its shadow (if it was FF12 like I'm thinking it was, its far inferior shadow). Not that Abyss sold poorly or was a flop, it did reasonably well, but compared to big name RPGs (mostly just Final Fantasy) it's been all but unnoticed.

      So I looked ToS up.

It has a tired and ugly anime style.

That's enough to make it unworthy of my time. Bloody ugly anime, ruins everything. Thank god sprites in Disgaea are tiny.

Oh, and on that subject, Disgaea. I've only played the second one. It's great, and it's hardcore.

If there is one perfect role playing game... that should be FALLOUT 2.

I bought XI, never got beyond the trial period. The game is huge but each consituent is boring as hell, plus there is no mouse control. Uh.
      Really?

      I completed XII too quickly.

Don't expect a challenge at the end is all I can say.

Right, I thought you meant ToS.

The great thing about ToS is it has a real time battle system that's loads of fun. No more random monster battles either. The battle is surprisingly deep, with dozens of side quests.

Yes, the main character is very generic. "Everyone says you're the guy. I want to be the guy too!"

The clever, deep and fun battle system is what makes this game. Also, it was one of only 4(I think) RPG's on GameCube.

      Don't judge a game by it's cover.

      Plus, I like anime style.

Tales of Symphonia is the one of my all time favorite RPGs. The battle system makes or breaks an RPG like Tales, and that is one of the main reasons I love it. I don't see what's so great about FFX - It has nice graphics and storyline, sure, but the fights aren't much fun. Tales of games let you go in and actually fight the way you want and are a lot more exciting.

I started Tales of the Abyss yesterday and am loving it more than ToS. The storyline seems deeper and broader than ToS so far - keep in mind I'm only in the Cheagle Woods - the storyline is certainly better because its not the generic adventure storyline where a person (Lloyd/Collete) from a small village is visited by a great wizard type person (Kratos) on a mission to save the world. I've already been through that twice with reading Lord of the Rings and The Sword of Shannara. TotA seems like a promising game, and from what I've seen, I've barely scratched the surface of the game. It keeps all the great elements from ToS and adds new ones such as AD skills.

Also, Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 are great games, along with ANY game released by Level 5.
