      D&D

As nerdy as some people may consider it, i've been interested in possibly getting into Dungeons & Dragons lately. I've never done it before, and I don't know how the game works in a lot of detail, but I do like the RP side of it. Does anyone here play? If so, what's a good way to get started? Especially seen none of my friends play and I don't live close to any stores that run nights of D&D or whatever.

      You enter a small bar.

You find a potion: +1 stamina.

      You find a rusty door.

      You used "Rusty Key"

      The door is locked

      You used "Rusty Key"

      The door is locked

You selected "Quit Game". Are you sure you want to quit?

      You selected "Yes".

Slightly amusing, but not very helpful

If you are interested in it for the RP side of things, I suggest you find a better table-top RPG. D&D isn't exactly known for being great for RP'ing. More so it's known for being hack and slash rules heavy. Find a Storytelling system, like World of Darkness, if you want something for the RP side of things.

D&D is coming out with 4th edition here soon, or so I've heard. A good way to get started is to just order the core rule book. If none of your friends play, get them interested in playing or check out a local college. A lot of those have Gaming groups.

Yeah, that's pretty much it if it was on a console.

Exactly? Do you not realize he was talking about a table-top game, not a console? Console's are vastly inferior to table-top games when it comes to RPG's.

I used to play it. It was great fun, really. What you can do in the game is pretty much endless and unlimited, offering a level of control over the storyline and your character than NO console game will ever have. The gamers work together to make the story unfold, which is really fun when the plot happens to be a good one, hehe. You actually have to THINK, unlike in most video games. To play D&D well you need to be confident and able to make decisions about what your character is doing - nothing is more annoying than when one of the players just sits there, says nothing, and has his character follow the others around like a little doggy.

The rules are certainly complicated, but you get used to them very quickly, trust me. After a few sessions you'll understand how it all works in no time. I recommend that you first buy the core rulebooks and read them so that you understand how the game works. Whilst a group certainly might be happy to welcome a new player with no knowledge of how it works whatsoever, they'd be much happier if you at least had a basic understanding

Finding a group might be a bit harder... however, although it might seem like no one around you plays it, lots of people do, just no-one talks about it because of how nerdy other people think it to be. Perhaps you could even try to start a group yourself amongst your friends by introducing them to RPing? My entire group of fellow players were all introduced to the game by me; I basically told them about it and asked if they'd be interested, which they were. They came over and we played the game for hours and all of us had so much fun that we would meet up every weekend for it.

Eew, D&D sucks. Forum RP'ing is MUCH better. Unless you're into numbers and plastic figurines.

Forum RP'ing has it's place. It's great for more descriptive, writing focused fun...but RP'ing around a table with your friends, some dice, and some snacks is not only a lot faster then play-by-post, but it can be a lot more fun. Especially if you have thematic friends.

True, I guess. But I like everything to be neat and saved. And have an extensive player base.

I like my RPG's epic with a side of plot development .

      Table-top's can be plenty epic

I do like the extensive player base, though it is a lot harder then I thought to find a Good, active forum based RP.

I have very, very, very unimaginative and stupid people surrounding me daily.

Ow. Well that depends on what kind of RPG you're looking for.

www.jplegacy.org/board has a section devoted to general RP'ing of all sorts, and let you start your own.

Yea, the non-member skin sucks. The old forum had a better one. But most people who bother to visit the site join, so not too many complaint are made.

The member default skin is much better, a green theme.

This is precisely the magic of it all, letting the imagination rule, while also running the game letting the players build the storyline as well.

I started playing D&D when it came out in 1978, moved into the second version of AD&D later on. Play regularly with the same set of friends for almost 20 years with only a couple of short stretches where we didnt play for a year or so inbetween. I think I finally quit altogether in the mid 90's.
A few years ago my kids found my collection and wanted to play , so I ran the game for them till a couple of years ago when I quit altogether and sold everything.

When we played years ago we were fortunate to have a guy among us who was a real good storyteller and writer. He took and built adventure themes from how we saw our characters and their histories and what we wanted to do with our characters. HE would incorporate the various D&D modules into our storyline.

About 1982 we started playing a set of characters we created. We each built castles, and even kingdoms with our characters along the way. We played these characters for a couple of years till they were so high level they were no longer really playable, so when they finally met their end in a massive adventure of near impossible obstacles, we then began another generation of characters all stemming from the bloodlines of those.
By the time everyone was out of college we were on the third generation of those characters and storyline. When the time approached for everyone to go their own ways in life after college our gamemaster sent us on one last expedition, into the infamous dungeon adventure, INFERNO. We made it to the end to battle and defeat Asmodeous, but the only surviving character out of a total of 7 pc's and 7 npc's in the end was a lone NPC cleric .
To this day when we get together we still reminiss of our grand adventures and hilarious actions. The fun, the imagination, and the laughter is a priceless memento of years gone by. Something you can only get from friends sitting around the same table in person with nothing but, dice, papers, pencils and imagination. Such is irreplacable.

It all depends on the persons playing and running the games. Our GM majored in philosphy and history in college and is now a teacher. Great synchronicity....

It falls flat in comparison to a good table-top game. Anti-Heroes is really all it has going for it at the moment and that isn't near as 'interactive' as a real RPG, since the person doesn't directly control/write their character.

NonDualistic had a great way of putting it. I've got similar experiences, only mine are with the World of Darkness line rather then D&D.
