I Hate Family Guy (Do You?)

I'm even from Rhode Island, and I still can't stand this show. I really don't understand what people see in it, so please enlighten me or tell me how right I am.

As far as I can see, all of the jokes are juvenile and half of them are based on bodily functions, there is no actual story line in the episodes, and they're generally a mish-mash of stupid, purposefully awkward and contrived joke-sequences which have nothing to do with anything, including each other.

Did I mention the jokes were stupid? (Like that ten minute sequence of them hurling after drinking syrup of Ipecac... clever? funny? No. Just no.)

I admit, a lot of the new ones have dropped in comedy ranking for me...but the old ones have a few things going for them.

One is no 10 minute long scenes...another is the random jokes were clever, and the last is that most of those jokes had refrences to older pop culture things which is what attracts the college level and 30 year old age group.

Random humor isnt for everyone though. So I understand your position

Well, I normally love random humor, but I think I love the unexpectedness of it.

If the entire thing is random, then it would be funnier for them to actually start being cohesive for a few minutes, just for shock value.

      A Show for Potheads

I'm not sure if you do drugs, but I'm pretty sure this show is almost fine-tuned for people that smoke pot. I quit a little while ago, but I sure had a hell of a time smoking a bowl and watching an episode of Family Guy. Sometimes, stupid random humor is just what you need.

Although I agree about the new episodes...they're just not as great.

Family Guy's first couple seasons were great, but their formula has worn thin. If anyone has seen Cartoon Wars from the last season of South Park, that about sums the show up. It doesn't help that it's in syndication, and you can't change the channel without it being on.

The show is bearable, but only as a last resort when nothing else is on, and I am stuck to the couch. No amount of weed could really make it funny though.

I defiantly don't hate Family Guy, but I'm getting to dislike it more and more for a couple of reasons. One, I have this friend who talks a lot about it. I got so sick of hearing his rants that the show became less enjoyable. Two for the above mentioned reasons. The characters have been so categorized (Quagmire is a sex-fiend, Stewie an evil-genius baby, etc) so that their actions and reactions are predictable. The lack of ideas shows like a beacon of light and comes off as just plain sloppy.

Personally I just love the near-constant Star Wars references, the occasional Princess Bride reference, and all the other references that are actually well-doone, and that I get. I do agree that the potty humor grows old after a while, but I can always switch back to Futurama if I get tired of Peter's fart jokes.

Pop culture references is what really drives the show, and I think I might have been a little harsh in my earlier comment. I get enjoyment out of that because I am a geek, even if the jokes are mostly recycled.

I can see why people find it an ineffective format, but it can be funny. Their Willy Wonka rip off was fantastic.

      South Park's better, though.

"Pop culture references" are essentially just references to things that were actually funny, and remind you of how great those other things were.

It's like photographing other people's artwork and then passing it off as yours...

I can see how they add some entertainment, but the whole show is just references. There's no actual good content that I can see in the show that isn't childish humor.

People have different tastes in humour, just because you don't like the show doesn't mean it's a crap show!

I like family guy mainly because of it's random flashbacks to emphasise the jokes as well as the visual jokes. I just find it funny.

I think it's a lovely show. It really fits the extremely black danish humor

I like it, for the most part. Sometimes it falls a little flat, but it's usually good for a laugh.

I loved when Lion-O and Cheetara from ThunderCats was on, and Lion-O was using the telepathic sight from the Sword of Omens to spy on Cheetara while she was on the can.

I never liked the show, even when it was new. I'm much more of a Simpson's kind of guy... the writing is much better, and the stories very clever. Every once in awhile there is a clunker episode, but for the most part, it's still going strong after all these years.

I watch Family Guy every now and then on Adult Swim, and some of the jokes are just plain bad (like when Peter forgot how to sit ) but some are just legendary (Search "The Four Peters" on Youtube, funny) And the jokes that do apply to the storyline are pretty good. One of my other complaints of the show is that it rarely makes a huge difference in the show, even when something huge happens, they just revert it. (See the episodes "Stewie Kills Lois" and "Lois Kills Stewie" for my point, but even they make a joke of it at the end)

So anyway, ok show, but I'm fine with my South Park.

Both Family Guy and The Simpsons have lost their effect on me. While I can still watch the older episodes of The Simpsons and get some enjoyment, the new ones do nothing for me. And Family Guy has all together lost its charm in my opinion.
