which mangas do you read?

I wanna talk about mangas, because recently I've been indulging in a few (especially when I have downtime at work) and realize there's a lot of good stories out there that are not just limited to anime.

The main reason I got into it was to read ahead on the plot for the animes I used to keep up with (like Naruto, Bleach, Gantz, etc.) and basically, I found there's hella more mangas than anime, and a lot of them are good! (and underrated)

A couple I just got into were:

Shamo - it's about a high school kid who killed his parents and got thrown into jail (they don't explain his motivation for killing them). believe it or not, he's the protaganist. this manga is rather graphic in content....his experience in jail is violent and abusive. he's even raped in jail.

the story climbs uphill when a certain karate teacher is introduced to the inmates and begins a regular martial arts session. the main character develops an appreciation for karate, and on a gradual level, increases his strength and technique to insane levels, and pretty much serves as his only means to surviving in jail (and he gets revenge on the inmate rapists)

however, over time, well after his sentence is up, he becomes increasingly violent, and develops a raging ambition to become the strongest man on the streets. at this point, the drama and tension in his relationships with other people are palpable, and wow...this manga is very gratifying, it's just intense the whole way through

----another manga I've been reading recently is Homunculus

this one's about man who wears a business-suit, hangs out with the homeless, and sleeps in his car every night. (his background is uncertain at first) a strange man approaches him one night in his car while he's sleeping, and offers him 700,000 yen (the equivalent of about 7,000 US dollars) to drill a hole in his head (without piercing the brain) -- it's an operation called trepanation. ancient tribes and civilizations actually used to practice this procedure for medical and mystical reasons. it was believed that with the hole in one's skull, one's capacity for imagination and intuition would be restored to that of a child. and because an adult would have more much experience and wisdom than that of a child, he could interpret and get more out of what his subconscious is feeding him....

...anyways, after the operation, the guy starts experiencing strange visions, and starts seeing people in symbolic images (eg. a yakuza boss is seen as a little boy trapped inside a large robot, or a schoolgirl is viewed as a woman made of sand - to represent a lack of concrete personality) rather than their literal human selves (as long as he covers his right eye and views with his left - implying that he's using the right hemisphere of his brain to view the world...because science states that the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body, vice versa) and he finds himself, on at a time, in extremely interesting interactions with these people as long as he's viewing their symbolic selves....

but yeah, I tend to enjoy reading manga more these days than watching anime.....you can go through the stories a lot faster (it's surprisingly satisfying to skim through mangas, you get what you need) and there stories out there are so good, a lot of them would be a shame to miss.

I like fun, cute, and innocent (more or less). That's just me. So I've been reading Tsubasa (and could have sworn I had vol 13 but apparently not!), Buso Renkin (only through vol 5), and Rosario Vampire.

I read the three volumes of Magic Knight: Rayearth and loved it up until the end.

(If there's more than three volumes, let me know. Clamp made me sad.)

I also read the one volume of Outcast that came out, but I haven't heard about any more that are coming out in the forseeable future. That's disappoiting because for an American-written manga, I enjoyed it!

Fuck yeah. Dude, do you know when it comes out on a regular basis? Also, where do you get your updates? I go to mangashare for gantz, but they're not very consistent.

Anyway, I read Naruto (Sadly. I started when I was like twelve, and I haven't been able to break the addiction since. New chapter is tonight. It's sad I know.)

Battle Royale was good as shit, it's over though.

There's nothing wrong with liking Naruto.

I read Naruto in Shonen Jump, which I have a subscription to. Before that, I was an avid reader of Yu-Gi-Oh in Shonen Jump. Sadly, it has ended.

An actual manga I read when I get the chance is a very cute one called Kamichama Karin. It's a very cute manga about a middle school girl that finds out the ring her dead mother gave to her allows her to transform into Goddess. There's more to the storyline, and makes a really good read. The sequel, Kamichama Karin Chu~ is out right now in English with new volumes out ever few months or so.

Gantz usually comes out on Thursdays. Check the gantz forum in mangahelpers.com, a new thread with a link to the direct download page is created for each chapter as soon as a raw gets online, translations and scanlations come soon after.

There are also spoiler threads updated with pics and the script a few days before the release. (I hate spoilers though

)

Thanks, man. True that about the spoilers. I think I remember that site, because before the last chapter came out I saw some thread where they were like 'a huge explosion signifies the end of the chapter'(which ended up being right), but I just wrote it off as being BS. I'd rather just wait and read the chapter than spoilers.

I have started reading Tsubasa from our local library, which unfortunately does not have a very expansive manga section, and so they only own the first three manga in the series. I'm currently searching other places for the next books in the series. Also, I've started reading Negima! Magister Negi Magi and am quite enjoying it. Once again, our library only has the first three in the series.

New Zealand doesn't have as much of a care for manga as other countries...

lul I don't think you've read the latest ones then... oh god. Stories been going downhill since the end of the first part of Naruto, when they have that Naruto vs. Sasuke fight. But at this point there's no more hope, he's just making it up as he goes along.

You're right, and I probably will never read the newest chapters. I'm content watching the Anime. Everyone at school says how I'm lame and should just read the manga, but I just like watching the Anime more than reading the manga version of it. Strange, but I'm just use to sticking with an Anime for the long haul.

I was like that. I read the English Manga in Shonen jump until it came to like the Rock Lee vs. Gaara fight, and I wanted to know the results so bad I looked online and found out that they had the Jap anime way ahead. I watched that for like three days straight all summer until I got to the end of Naruto, and then started watching Shippuden every week or whenever until I found out the Japanese manga was even years ahead of that. So I just sat down and read those for like two days until I got to the end. Took a fucking long time.

How far is the anime nowadays anyway?

P.S. Don't blame you about not reading the manga. I'm too impatient. But if you knew what was happening now you would probably feel the same way I do haha.

I try to watch atleast the first couple episodes of an anime, while reading the manga to see which is better.

This is how I found out that Negima was better with the Manga.

Naruto is off training with Jiraiya to learn jutsu that use less chakra so Naruto won't start relying on Futon: Rasenshuriken. I'm pretty sure it's filler, but it's leading up to the Sanbi Arc.

Barnes and Nobles near my house has tons of mangas. I glance at a few now and then when I'm there looking for other books. Too bad they don't have a wide variety of good mangas, or I'd be there more than one to three times a year! 8D
