The only way to completely understand the movie is to read the novel. I saw it with alot of my friends who had NEVER read or even heard of the Watchmen. They thought it was stupid, confusing and gay. I ended up having to explain every little detail to them on the way home!

I'm glad I read it before seeing the movie

Mmm, though technically Adrian wasn't really a bad guy in the end. He used deception and an extreme act of mass destruction in order to create political peace in order to avert what could have otherwise turned out to be nuclear war and the end of most life on Earth. It was like picking the lesser evil for a good cause, when no other act of good was doing the job. Even Adrian's reaction to the other corporate executives in their meeting demonstrated that his ambitions were not selfish in origin.

Adrian was a tool. I didn't like his character in the film, but in the book I did. Maybe it was just the actor. Whatever half-assed accent he was trying to do, didn't work.

      Rorschach will be everyone's favorite.

Yeah except Dr. Manhattan is usually everyone's favorite...

I was wondering about Adrian's accent, too. There was something a little off about certain words he said.

I have a question about Rorschach's mask. How did it come to be like that, with the moving ink blots? Does the novel talk about it at all?

Ended up seeing it today, and I liked it, but wasn't thrilled. They tried too hard to stay true to the graphic novel, I think, with the result being a Readers Digest version of the story with half-realized characters. It may just be too many characters to flesh out in a feature film, even at almost 3 hours runtime. The only characters that felt real to me were Night Owl and Dr. Manhattan, with The Comedian a runner up. Rorschach's backstory in particular came off as contrived and ridiculous.

They just tried to cram too much in there, with the result having some great scenes, but lacking focus overall.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

Rorschack in that cartoon isn't ANYTHING like he was in the film. Loves animals? Dude Rorschak (or however you spell his name) slaughtered two dogs in the film. Not to mention that voice was horrible in that cartoon opening. I'm glad my eyes were spared from such a travesty. The cartoon Elis D. watched though...I think I'll see that.

I guess hollywood likes changing things though...in the dragonball sequel, it's been revealed that the storyline will go "Namekians enslaved the saiyans", thereby erasing frieza from the picture. Not to threadjack though

The cartoon is a mockery, a sham, a parody, it's not actually real.
Getting novel, $15 sounds great to me.

It's worth twice that. I wonder if that's a country-wide sale, I might pick it up on my way to the IMAX.

The funny thing about this is Zach Snyder created a masterpiece. An almost perfect rendition of novel page to movie screen.

Unfortunately that's not what you saw. Zach Synder's director cut was 4 and some odd minutes long. They obviously trimmed it down to it's 2 hour and 45 minute run time. You're missing a good hour and a half of footage there.

Directors cut includes The Black Freighter, Rorschach's backstory, as well as other things not included in the film.

But would that be an improvement? It felt long at 2:45. I'm not saying there weren't plenty of satisfying moments, but making a "perfect rendition of novel page to movie screen" is no way to make a feature film.

If he could serialize it, maybe: we would have time to get to know the characters and their relationships and digest what's happening. For a single feature, however, you need to focus and have your own vision for a film that draws on the original work, is perhaps based on the original work and preserves the themes, but you can't just hack away at the original until you have something feature-length and expect it to stand on its own as a movie.

I know. I am fully aware of the reasoning behind his actions. The dichotomy of doing evil to create good is something one can't help but think about at times, especially after watching a movie like this. Rorschach, however, maintained hope that disaster could be averted somehow without destroying entire cities. Sure, no one knew how to do it, but the fact still remains that he wouldn't sacrifice millions for a temporary cease-fire.

And I never said Adrian was a bad guy.

      Anyway, carry on.

I liked it, but wasn't crazy about it. One scene offended my religious sensitivities because of the song they chose to accompany it ("Jah" is a poetic rendering of God's name- and Hallelujah means 'Praise Yah [God] you people') and it had no business being in a sex scene lol

The movie also seemed pornographic during the sex scenes and I really got sick of seeing Dr. Manhattan's wang throughout it

It was too long, but necessary. I'd like to read the novel now to find out more.

My husband absolutely loved the entire thing. He has a very dark sense of humor and loved the satire.

Finally, someone understands that what works in a book, graphic novel, etc, doesn't necessarily work in a movie.

lol, I think it just requires a critical mass of actual novels you've read by people other than Grisham, Clancy and Rowling.

Saw it. Was very impressed. Seemed like it jumped around a bit, but it was very deep and thought provoking, which is much more than I expect from a "superhero" movie.
Rorschach was my favorite character as well. I liked the Comedian's view of society too, it's pretty true.

I don't think the "peace" brought on by Adrian's deception will last though. It's humanity we're talking about.
