Surreal Movies

Recommend me some surreal/dreamy movies. Et cetera. Around those genres.

So far I've got Vanilla Sky and The Butterfly Effect on my list. (No, I haven't seen them yet)

I especially love foreign ones, as long as they aren't hard to find around the net. =P

I've seen Let The Right One In and though it was amazing. Just for an idea of what kind I like.

Check out The Fall, I have been meaning to watch that for awhile. It's supposed to be very surreal. Also maybe Pan's Labyrinth, another I need to see. Butterfly Effect is absolutely amazing, by the way.

Dark City....it'll leave you with that "what if" feeling like the matrix does.

Mirror Mask, Labyrinth (not to be confused with Pan's Labyrinth).

Uh...I'll think of more later.

OK, here goes:

-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind, Being John Malkovich, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Paprika, Donnie Darko, The Science of Sleep, The Taste of Tea, Videodrome, Waking Life, Metropolis, Garden State (not exactly dreamy or surreal but it fit's in there), Naked Lunch, Stalker, Synecdoche New York, Twelve Monkeys, Fight Club, Wristcutters - A Love Story, Heavy Metal.

-Anything by David Lynch or Jan Švankmajer (Alice and Otesanek are great).

-Dark City and Labyrinth are indeed great.

-Pan's Labyrinth, The Fall and Mirrormask are beautiful, but lack something. Watch 'em anyway though

-Next is awful, but you can watch it and decide for yourself.

Have fun trying to complete the list :p

Run, Lola, Run. I seem to remember dreamlike changes in the plot, but it's been awhile since I've seen it.

Kinda dark but I thought Night Watch and Day Watch were fairly surreal.

Quoted for truth. Also, check out Terrence Malick's The New World. It is a very dreamlike look at the early settlement of Jamestown.

I concur with much of the above, though if you liked Vanilla Sky and you like foreign films, then burn your copy of VS and track down the much better Spanish original, Abres los Ojos.

I'll add Brainstorm, 1983, Christopher Walken. The premise is sci-fi, but the execution is very surreal. Also The Man Who Fell to Earth, 1976, David Bowie.
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

Yeah, I've had someone tell me that and actually wanted to see it before VS. Problem is I can't find Abres Los Ojos anywhere.

Aren't you in NYC? I found a used copy on DVD at a bookstore in Ohio.

Not anymore, I live in the middle of nowhere in Virginia now. I don't think there's a DVD store anywhere around here. But I will look for it if I ever go into a quirky DVD place.. I was hoping I could find it somewhere on the internet. =/

Well looky what I found: http://www.fancast.com/movies/Abre-L...ur-Eyes/videos

I haven't used this site before, but it looks 100% legit.

EDIT: in the interest of re-railing, I've taken video troubleshooting to PM

Really? Nobody said these yet?

Waking Life, Un Chein ANdalou, L' Age d'or, and Dreams by Akira Kurosawa. Waking Life was already mentioned, but it was in a wall of text so I felt the need to post it again. Bravo, everybody.

Never seen it, but it sounds good. Neo-Noir is always sweet. And you need to be a heartless fiend to not like a good sci-fi with philosophical undertones.

Did I mention Dune? I don't think I did.
