I was never that big of a fan of Pink Floyd until recently.

Getting baked and going to a Pink Floyd laser light show is probably one of the coolest things you can do, ever.

Maybe not the greatest, but pretty damn close
Ironically, I'm listening to them now. Pigs (Three Different Ones)

Catbus, same here. I wasn't too familiar with them, them one day I was in the car (high) with my cousin and his friend, and they played a few Floyd songs. Instant fan

Of course, the Beatles never dabbled in psychedelia, did they?

Pink Floyd were very good, but definitely not the best. Three of their albums I find very good, namely DSotM, Echoes and Wish You Were Here. I really cannot bear to listen to The Wall.

I can see why they're good, but I'm not big on their style of music.

Comfortably numb is a fantastic song. That doesn't change the fact that there's about enough material to make two singles, not a double album.

It's almost all boring filler, the lyrics are totally narcissistic and whiney, and it makes me want to slit my wrists.

It's really not poetry. There's five or so songs I'd say have standout lyrics. The rest isn't worth paying attention to. Very rarely did they have any kind of coherent point to make; the vast majority of the time they were just high.

Pink Floyd is a phase. Once you get a bit older and your palette broadens somewhat, they don't seem so out there.

Pink Floyd is interesting and definitely a good band. But really, there's no "best band ever". As humans, we constantly go through phases, and we find new music that we like a little more. Our "best band" changes all the time. At the time, I'd say my favourite band is maybe Tool or Massive Attack, but eventually I'll move on and find something else that I like a little more, or I'll grow entirely bored with metal and triphop.

Well the story behind the Wall follows a fictional character called Pink that becomes a crazy rock star and goes over the edge, so that kind of makes sense .

Pink Floyd is probably my second favourite band, after Led Zeppelin.

Definitely my favorite band, they really are amazing imo, I never really listened to them until my friend said they were good, so i went home and listened to them, instant fan.

Part of the reason Pink Floyd is amazing is because of their history, starting with Barret, Waters, Mason and Wright, with a very psychedelic beginning, Barret dropped after going insane, they settled on a softer tune with the heavier influence of Gilmour during Meddle and OBC, soon they were ready to create DSOTM with that beautiful heavy sound and deeper song meaning, which fell into Wish You Were Here, Animals and of course, The Wall. After The Wall, Richard Wright left after being accused of not pulling his weight, and the remaining trio went on to write the Final Cut, that of which Roger Waters wrote all the music for, meanwhile, Waters and Gilmour are arguing about the album, which leads to Water's leaving the group, so went into Gilmour's era, Wright was hired as a musician in the making up of Momentary Lapse of Reason and finally The Division Bell.

My point is that, everyone can be satisfied by Pink Floyd, which isn't quite a single band, but a culmination of different groups and eras that come together to form their discography.

As for The Wall, I think it's probably their most overrated album, but that doesn't change that it's still amazing. You can't say it's all filler, every song on that album is great, with my personal favorites Comfortably Numb, One of my turns, Run, Empty Spaces, Young lust, Another Brick in the Wall, and of course Mother (probably my favorite of the album). Definitely Water's masterpiece, and it sounds "narcissistic and whiney" because that's what he was trying to portray, Pink's rise and self destruction. The movie's is worth watching aswell.

I don't see what you mean by their lyrics not having much meaning, all of their songs are meaningful, and there's plenty of songs that don't need lyrics.

My favorite albums are DSOTM, Animals and probably Obscured by Clouds

And tbh, I don't like PF being forever tagged with drugs, it's simply not true, sure in the early years it was heavily acid inspired, but so was every other band at the time, it really isn't about the drugs, I've listened to them high, pretty much all I listen to high, I don't need drugs to enjoy PF, but then again, Pink Floyd gets me high on music alone.

Gah, i can say so much about Pink Floyd, easily my favorite band

P.S. I love the Beatles, but yes, they're overrated

      Lol good bump Xei.

      Also, I remember this thread.

I also want to take back my comment about how they are nowhere near the greatest.

      They are indeed the greatest.
I was talking about this earlier actually in DV chat. I was saying how I'd love to time travel back to the 80s, and go to that damn concert at Berlin. The Wall. Best shit ever.
That concert looked like it would have been the best concert ever in history.

If I ask you what the best concert ever was and you don't say Woodstock you're lying.

As for what Marvo said, I agree. They're great, but as far as being really out there, and impressive with where they're coming from, once I got deeper into Yes I realized Floyd can't even compare. Same goes for Tool, in a different sort of way. They have a neat sound, but as far as depth, once you get into bands that really go deep, you realize that, in hindsight, Floyd isn't as deep as you may have thought.

In fact, a lot of people may not think of it this way, but Jim Morrison and The Doors had a lot more to say than Pink Floyd ever did...then again, they had more to say than a lot of bands.
