Simple reason really, he said that if he was to get re-elected that he would stand down during this, his third term. People like his party, just not him, so seeing him go and having a good government seemed to be the best way to go.

When he goes, the chances are we'll get Brown, he's not really the type to follow the leader of another country against puplic opinion.
