Thread: Affirmative Action?

i dont really like the whole idea of this. with affirmative action it is almost promoting an implication that we were not all created equal. that if there are two people who are equally qualified for a job, you must choose the minority for fear that that person may be offended.

the truth of the matter is, that maybe (even if you were equally qualified) you might be declined from a job application simply because your employer doesn't like your personality. this isn't to imply they don't like your race, but maybe they don't like the way you talk. maybe it just sounds unsophisticated which, unfortunately, the hip-hop and rap scene promote. again: im not targeting anyone in particular with this example. as we all know, its defenately not only blacks and hispanics that listen to rap/hip-hop.

i feel that it is up to the employer to choose who he would like for the job, without fear of being accused to racism. its just unfair.

I guess I could complain about you for bring up totally unrelated topics, but I am not a pussy, like you are.

And as I have said before, sometimes benefiting a race that is being discriminated by society (like black people in america) kind of makes it a bit more even. Really you can&#39;t deny that black people have equal chances in america, try to hold a cab if you are black.

i have a question about this "law." if the person hiring happened to be a minority (say african american) and there where are white man and a black man applying for a job with equal qualifications who would they be required to pick? i know techniquelly the black man is the minority, but couldn&#39;t it be considered racist if he chose the black man > the white man?

basically this "law" doesn&#39;t make any sense at all and, again, is just further promoting inequality.

The law promotes an inequality to limit an already existing inequality. There is a similar law in France, they call it "Discrimination positive", so there goes the answer to your question. And of course, affirmative action makes sense only if the two applicants have the same qualifications, otherwise we would end up having gangstas presenting the 6 o&#39;clock news.

This is my two cents. "Affirmative action", a policy which has an equivalent in my own country in relation to Maori and Polynesian, is a bullshit racist idea.

The core idea behind affirmative action is to promote opportunities to races which, on average, have a lower socio-economic position. So, It&#39;s racist to dole out opportunities on the grounds of RACE.

What we SHOULD be doing, if anything, is favouring those who come form lower socio-economic backgrounds, rather than race.

By merely thinking in terms of "disadvantaged races", we are being racist. We&#39;re using the superficial and politically loaded concept of race to single out people for opportunities, when what we SHOULD be doing, is doing so on grounds of socio-economic status.

This was, disadvantaged people would be benefited regardless of race. And, since certain races have on average a lower socio-economic status, they will be benefitted more, but not on terms of race.

These laws are hands down racist. There&#39;s no two ways about it. Such laws legislate the selection of a person over another person due to RACE. In other words, it&#39;s legislated racial discrimination. PERIOD.

It&#39;s offensive and it&#39;s hypocritical. The concept is to fight racism by legislating racism. Idiocy and nothing more. To reiterate Universal Mind, many of us would like for a world free from racism. It&#39;s fully unfair and downright insulting to discriminate against a race simply because in the past members of their race were largely racist. Maybe we should strive to eliminate racism, rather than making more, ya know?

Yeah but the point is. Too many employers are white men and racists that would rather hire another white man than a Latino as new Employee. JUST because he is white. Maybe the Latino man had better working skills, but due to racism many employers give their Jobs to their &#39;&#39;Race-mates&#39;&#39; Kind of sick but that&#39;s how it often works. In America, In the Netherlands. Racism is far from being only history.

To counter that, and to give folks from ethnic minorities equal chances, the Government could only force that uppon the Racist Employers by a law: Affirmative action.

No I think they should hand employers a couple of CVs with skills and degrees documented of the different people applying for their Job you offer. A name, Picture or Ethnic Origin should NOT be specified on the CVs.

The employer has to pick one of the Employees offering themselves for the Job based on their skills & Degrees only. Once he&#39;s hired them he should be able to see wether he hired a black dude, a white dude or a Latino dude...Just so he can&#39;t Racially judge them uppon hiring them

Then there wouldn&#39;t be any afirmative action needed.

The land-stealing was bad. Yet it happend. All good that can be done now is to make sure everyone gets treated equally and gets equal rights. Black people do not have equal chances, I can give you that.

Have you ever heard of white people helping with the underground railroad? Have you ever heard about the ticket Abraham Lincoln ran for President under (the end of slavery)? Lincoln got elected under that, by the way. Have you ever heard of white people being killed for helping black people before 1900? That happened a lot.
