He did that. It wasn't an earthquake machine, but something similar. Apparently he almost brought a building in construction down using resonance with a small vibrating thingy.

I don't know how it is in America, but I think that everybody here has at least heard of Tesla before. Perhaps because he is a Serb, so he is "mentioned". Ironically I don't know much about Edison.
