Thread: The origin of offensive words

"Dick" also carries a negative connotation, when used in such context. What is the purpose of this thread?

Yeah, I agree that words shouldn't have such negative connotations. I belong to another forum that uses the word cunt constantly, and no one is offended.

I changed the thread title, just so that's not so blatantly out there.

I do think you have a good point though, OD. This is actually a pet peeve of mine, in some ways. Look at the words 'gay' and 'faggot', for example. They have been bastardized to mean homosexual, when they actually, originally meant totally different things! I wonder how a word that meant joyous cheer, and a word that described a bundle of sticks, came to be slang for homosexual.

However, in your original post you mentioned three words. Cunt, as you've said, goes back to Latin, but even further, it means of triangular shape. Bitch is, of course, a female dog. It should be obvious how that would be offensive when addressed to a woman. Whore goes back to the Old Norse "hóra", which means prostitute or adulterer. It has pretty much always meant the same, far as I know. If you can't see how that's offensive when addressed to someone, then you have a long road ahead of you...

In ancient Babylon, as well as old societies we came from like the Saxons, the prostitute was actually a highly revered position and came with a lot of social status. These women were not whores but artists. The tricks they could do with their tongues would bring millions to see their splender.

In our male dominated society, the holy path of a woman is considered to be abstinance, but that's just another form of control. Having sex for money is actually an ancient rite many used to practice in order to achieve spiritual renewal.

And yes, mos, I do feel your anger. For too long have our ancient, holy phrases been kept under the iron grip of linguistic control and negative association. We must break free from our shackles and be liberated in our language.

Okay, I'm beginning to convince myself I'm an asshole, because using words in their negative forms only promotes their currently tainted status in our society. I'd be the first to call somebody a cunt (especially wendylove) but that's bad because I'm associating a beautiful word like cunt with something negative, in this case a person that has managed to convince themselves they're the only rational thinker left alive.

What gets me though is the way nigger is used a lot. Now it's offensive in the US and the PC police have managed to create an atmosphere where white people think they'll get their asses kicked for saying it. That's just the US, in Argentina and all over the world as well as in rural parts of the US people say it the same way they used to, which is to mean something or somebody with no self respect or dignity.

My pot dealer from my home town, this 60ish old guy with the medical marijuana card because he has like 1/10th the amount of good cholesteral a body needs just to survive, used to tell me about how the politically correct police have ruined everything. He said nigger wasn't supposed to be against black people, it was just a word to denote something or somebody lower than the belly of a snake. I see that outside of the U.S. this is still how it's used.

And people think "it's just a word" but what is a word? A word is a symbol, it carries associations with it that people can't even begin to realize, drawing back to the very root of our cultures. People make arguments like "way to change the definition fo a word" but they're being retarded because words have no definitions set in stone. They are meant to symbolize ideas so other people can understand what you're talking about. It doesn't matter what words someone chooses, but how well they convey their idea. If it is conveyed, they used those words successfully. In this way, vocabulary and vernacular are constantly changing as people find new ways to express themselves.

And all that babbling comes down to one final point, by associating words with negative things (as in, using the word gay, cunt, etc...) we are solidifying their new definitions, but they haven't lost their old ones. Nigger still means black guy, cunt still means vagina, gay still means homosexual, that may not be the origin but it is what the letter G, A and Y are meant to symbolize. Thus, we are connecting there actual definitions with the new negative connotations they take on. Even if the car in front of you was acting like a nigger gay cunt, and not actually like a homosexual black vagina, you are associating that fucking douche bag with all the gays, blacks and vaginas in the world. That is bad, vaginas deserve better than to be associated with every prick you come across. Even if cunt doesn't mean vagina to YOU it is part of our linguistic heritage to mean vagina.

A "bad word" is only bad because you say it's bad.

The logic behind swear words is the same as the logic behind people saying pot should be illegal because of all the crime surrounding it, when there would be no crime if it wasn't illegal.

Yea, we want them to be taken poorly. If you say a curse word and the person isn't offended then, it clearly didn't work.

Though we still should have freedom of speech. And people should use common sense. If your not using it in an offensive way, they shouldn't complain about it being a bad word.
