Cigarettes have been like €4-€4,50 since forever here (decent brands, that is). I don't smoke but 90% of my friends do, so I get "confronted" with it a lot. €4 is about $5,40. While I admit $7,42 is ridiculous (though I personally like it better as it will both discourage people to smoke and will actually force people with low nominal income to lesser their smoking habits), $3,75 was quite cheap compared to cigs over here.
All in all... sux2bu. rox2bme.
EDIT
And I agree with Amethyst. Producers aren't forcing anyone to smoke, they're simply putting a product on the market - you're saying drug addicts are victims of their dealers? They, the addicts themselves, at one point decided to begin. All the producers are doing is filling the demand for a certain profitable product; they're simply putting some bread on their tables. You don't have to smoke, y'know.
